With the 2026 NHL Draft about a week away, Pittsburgh’s scouting staff is evaluating where Adam Novotny might fall and whether he fits the Penguins’ next group of prospects.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are moving into the final stretch of preparation for the 2026 NHL Draft, and a fresh prospect profile on Adam Novotny is part of the process of identifying players who could be available when the Penguins are on the clock. Yahoo Sports’ pre-draft preview frames Novotny as another name the club will likely consider as it maps out its draft-day options.
In the NHL, the final week before the draft often brings quiet but consequential work: tightening board priorities, comparing risk profiles, and deciding whether to trade down for more darts at the target or stay at the pick to secure a specific type of prospect. The Penguins, who have continued to emphasize prospect development as a long-term roster strategy, are approaching the draft with that same need for clarity as they look toward the next wave of contributors.
Novotny’s mention in a Penguins-focused prospect profile underscores how Pittsburgh evaluates depth and upside across multiple tiers of the board. When a team highlights a specific player in a preview series, it is usually an indication that scouts and analysts see at least one attractive path to NHL projection, even if the selection itself is uncertain and depends on how other teams manage their needs and their own rankings.
A key draft-day reality is that “could be on the board” is not the same as “will be available.” Teams that are also searching for structural fits can move a player up the board, and the range of outcomes can compress quickly as the draft approaches. That is why the Penguins’ internal assessment of players like Novotny is likely tied to more than pure talent. It also depends on where his skill set could translate against the style and expectations of the NHL level, as well as how Pittsburgh’s prospect pipeline is shaped by the positions it still needs to develop.
The Yahoo Sports preview also positions the 2026 Draft as an inflection moment for organizations that have to balance immediate improvement with a sustainable rebuild path. For Pittsburgh, adding another prospect profile to the conversation is consistent with a draft approach built around identifying players who can grow into roles in the organization’s system.
At this stage, the most accurate takeaway is the question the preview raises: should the Penguins take Novotny if he remains within their range when the pick comes? The answer, as always in drafts, is conditional on board placement and on how the Penguins weigh upside versus fit relative to the rest of the talent still available.
As the draft gets closer, watch for additional scouting updates and organizational messaging that clarify whether Pittsburgh is targeting specific player types or prioritizing flexible value. If Novotny’s name continues to surface across prospect coverage in the days ahead, it could suggest the Penguins view him as more than a passing consideration rather than a simple “best player available” placeholder.
