Pfizer licenses Chai Discovery’s AI model for antibody and biologics drug discovery

The deal gives Pfizer early access to Chai-3 and a custom version of the platform built with Pfizer’s proprietary data, as the two companies move from AI research toward deployment inside drug discovery workflows.

Pfizer (NYSE: PFE) has signed a licensing agreement with Chai Discovery to use the company’s generative AI software in drug discovery, Chai Discovery announced this week. Under the arrangement, Pfizer will integrate Chai Discovery’s AI platform into its discovery operations and gain early access to Chai-3, the latest model in Chai’s antibody and biologics design stack.

The partnership is aimed at speeding up early-stage discovery, where traditional efforts often rely on lengthy experimental cycles and uncertain outcomes. Chai Discovery says its models can predict and redesign molecular interactions, helping scientists design biomolecules with targeted functional properties and compress the “discovery loops” that typically take months or years into shorter sprints.

Chai Discovery described Chai-3 as a step-change upgrade for AI-driven antibody design. It said the new model doubles the success rate of Chai’s predecessor and is designed to produce antibodies that meet therapeutic development requirements. The company also said Chai-3 improves capabilities tied to therapeutic binding, multi-specific antibody design, and the identification of molecules that bind hard-to-drug targets.

Chai Discovery added that the Pfizer integration will include a customized model built using Pfizer’s proprietary data and tailored to Pfizer’s workflows. The announcement positions the custom component as a way to adapt a frontier model to the specific decisions and data structures used by a large biopharmaceutical research organization.

The update builds on Chai Discovery’s earlier release, Chai-2, which Chai described as its first “zero-shot” antibody design platform. In that framing, zero-shot means the model can propose designs without needing task-specific training on prior examples, and Chai said Chai-2 achieved double-digit experimental hit rates and a large improvement in drug-like properties compared with previous computational approaches.
