Pixel Watch adds opt-in “breathing emergency detection” that can place automatic emergency calls
Google says the feature can recognize dangerous drops in blood oxygen using watch sensors and, if the user does not respond, escalate from haptics to an audible alert and then an emergency services call via a connected phone or LTE-enabled watch.
A new opt-in safety feature for Pixel Watch is designed to act when a breathing-related medical emergency leaves someone unable to call for help. In a blog post published August 12, Google described “breathing emergency detection,” which it says can detect critically low blood oxygen levels and, if the user appears unresponsive, automatically call emergency services and notify emergency contacts.
Google said the triggering scenario is a breathing emergency such as severe pneumonia, an accidental drug overdose, or choking, where oxygen saturation can fall quickly and the person may become unresponsive. The company framed the goal as bridging the gap that often occurs when no one is nearby to recognize what is happening and place a call.
The feature relies on an AI-based algorithm that analyzes indicates from the watch’s heart-rate, motion, and altitude sensors. To reduce accidental activations, Google said the system verifies that the user is in a low-motion state without rapid altitude changes. It also said it attempts to lower false notifications from sleep apnea by confirming that the user has not been asleep for more than 30 minutes.
If the algorithm determines the user has stopped breathing, Google described a phased escalation intended to provide the person a chance to cancel. First, the watch delivers strong haptic vibration and a full-screen visual notification. If the user does not dismiss it, the watch adds an audible alert and begins a 30-second countdown. If the countdown ends without a response, the feature prompts a connected phone or an LTE-enabled watch to call emergency services.
After the emergency call connects, Google said an automated voice message tells the operator that a breathing emergency has been detected. The message also indicates the user is not responding and shares the user’s precise location. If emergency contacts have been set up, Google said the feature sends them a notification that the user may need help.
Google said developing the technology required specialized medical work because breathing emergencies are time-sensitive and cannot be easily reproduced in everyday life. The company said it collaborated with internal medicine doctors, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, and emergency medical experts to understand how oxygen loss presents in the body, and used that medical input to shape the technology.
The company said it tested the algorithm in clinical labs by simulating emergency conditions under medical supervision. Google also said it evaluated the system against “hundreds of thousands of hours” of real-world data with the stated aim of reducing false alarms, including those linked to sleep apnea or quiet rest. Google added that it worked with emergency medical services and public health leaders to align its alerts with existing emergency response systems.
As part of its broader approach to personal safety, Google said breathing emergency detection is the latest addition to a suite of safety features that already includes Loss of Pulse Detection. Loss of Pulse Detection is designed to help identify potential emergencies when a user stops showing signs of pulse, and Google positioned the new capability as an additional layer focused on breathing-related incidents.
The rollout is limited geographically. Google said breathing emergency detection is available now on Pixel Watch 4 and 5 in several European countries, including Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the U.K., and said it expects to expand availability to more countries. Google also noted that Pixel Watch 5 is open for preorder and will be on shelves August 20, starting at $399 for the 41mm model and $429 for the 45mm model.
Google also emphasized important limitations. The feature may not detect every breathing emergency, is not intended for users with preexisting respiratory conditions with chronically low oxygen saturation levels or for pregnant users, and will not detect emergencies after the user has been asleep for 30 minutes. Emergency calling depends on call functionality such as the phone or watch being charged and having adequate cellular connectivity, and Google cautioned that emergency services may not respond. The company also said it does not diagnose or treat any medical condition and has not been cleared or evaluated by the U.S. FDA. It said the product is CE marked for the EU and that it has not been evaluated in the U.S. by the FDA.
