Dozens of people rallied near the Ellipse entrance holding signs and chanting during a Sunday afternoon UFC event on the White House grounds, according to a report by The Guardian.
President Donald Trump held a UFC mixed-martial-arts event on White House grounds on Sunday afternoon, and protesters gathered outside the entrance gates to the Ellipse, the park south of the White House, as the fights began, according to The Guardian.
The report said dozens of demonstrators stood along or near the Ellipse entrance holding protest signs and chanting before the event’s start as thousands of fight fans entered the venue.
According to The Guardian, the event featured seven MMA bouts held on the lawn of the White House, and it described the UFC gathering as the first private, for-profit sporting event ever staged on White House grounds.
Protesters in the reported rally criticized the president’s decision to host the UFC event at the White House, using slogans captured in the report, including language describing the situation as “reeks of corruption.” The article did not detail the specific legal or administrative complaints behind the demonstration.
The Guardian also reported that demonstrations took place beyond Washington, with additional rallies occurring across the country on Sunday in connection with the event.
A White House or event-organizer statement addressing the protests was not included in the available information, and no official documentation of the event’s contracting, permitting, or security cost structure was provided in the report summarized here.
