Rain postponement in ALCS Game 4 does not change the Guardians’ starter plan

Manager Stephen Vogt said the Friday rainout will not disrupt Cleveland’s pitching approach for the rescheduled Game 4 Saturday, with Shawn Armstrong slated to start.

The Friday postponement of Game 4 of the American League Championship Series did not force the Guardians to reshuffle their top starting-plan decision. Manager Stephen Vogt said after Friday’s delay that Shawn Armstrong will start for Cleveland in the rescheduled Game 4 on Saturday.

Vogt also described how the rainout could change the bullpen chess game even if it does not change the opener. He previously identified Game 4 as a potential bullpen-oriented setup in the series, and after the postponement the club still treated Armstrong as the centerpiece of the Saturday plan rather than converting Griffin into the starter.

While Cleveland’s immediate starter is set, the delay creates timing questions for the next turns in the rotation. Vogt said Foster Griffin was “in line to be ready to pitch” Saturday, emphasizing that the left-hander is expected to be on normal rest after starting Game 1 on Monday, but he did not commit to using Griffin as the Game 4 starter.

Vogt noted the Guardians had options to adjust Griffin’s next outing earlier or later, including the possibility of Griffin following Armstrong as a bulk reliever, but any specific usage beyond Armstrong was left undecided as Saturday approaches.

The postponement also figured to impact Parker Messick’s next start window. Vogt outlined that Messick, who started Game 2, had been positioned to make a second start in the ALCS at Tampa Bay on Monday on five days’ rest, but Saturday’s outcome and the overall pitching needs would determine whether Sunday’s Game 5 or Monday’s Game 6 becomes Messick’s next appearance.

Cleveland entered the stretch without the luxury of extra preparation time, with Vogt acknowledging both teams will play four straight games. Game 4 is set for Saturday, followed by Game 5 Sunday, then Games 6 and 7 on Monday and Tuesday if needed.

Why It Matters

  • Because Game 4 remains anchored by Armstrong as the starter, Cleveland’s late-series pitching identity should stay intact despite the lost day.
  • The rainout increases leverage for Cleveland’s bullpen usage, especially around Griffin’s availability after his normal-rest timing.
  • Messick’s next-turn decision becomes more conditional, tying his start to how Saturday’s plan and game flow shape the rest of the series.
  • With no extended off-days after the postponement, Cleveland’s next few appearances likely depend more on immediate workload management than on long-range rotation sequencing.
