The Los Angeles Rams signed outside linebacker Tomon Fox, an addition that reshapes their off-season competition at a position group where depth and special teams value can matter as much as starter reps. Fox, 28, arrives after four seasons with the New York Giants. Across 37 career games, he totaled 45 tackles, including five tackles for loss, and added four quarterback hits and two sacks. He also has two career starts, which points to a player who has contributed on the margins but has shown he can be deployed when opportunities arise.

At the time of the signing, the Rams’ need for bodies in the outside linebacker mix had become more urgent. The team had placed undrafted rookie free agent signee and outside linebacker Eddie Walls III on injured reserve on June 4, a transaction that removed a young developmental option from the immediate offseason picture.

Fox’s entry into the NFL also tracks a common path for rotational defenders. He originally joined the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2022 after playing college football at North Carolina. His college resume included being a third-team All-ACC selection in 2021, and he finished his Tar Heels career with 29.5 sacks, the third-most in school history, which helps explain why the Rams view him as more than purely a depth fallback.

With Fox joining the group, he is likely to compete for reps both in defensive packages and on special teams. The Rams’ top end talent in the pass-rush rotation tends to draw most of the attention, but offseason roster decisions are often decided by who can contribute consistently across multiple roles, especially in June and July.

For Fox, the Rams represent a chance to translate his experience into a clearer pathway. He has been a contributor at times in New York, and his sack totals, along with quarterback hits, suggest he has played with disruptive intent rather than only serving as a run-down participant. That profile fits a team that regularly looks to add athletic, pressure-capable defenders into its defensive framework.
