Los Angeles’ veteran defensive voice says the group is built for more, but he is careful about timing this early in the offseason.
A day after the calendar flipped deeper into the offseason, Rams safety Kam Curl set the tone for how Los Angeles wants its defense to be discussed in 2026. In a June appearance featured by Yahoo Sports, Curl emphasized that he expects “big things” from the Rams’ defense, while also acknowledging that it is still early and that spring optimism should not be treated as a finished product.
Curl’s message, as presented in the Yahoo Sports segment, focuses less on specific statistical projections and more on mindset. He is anticipating growth from the defensive unit, and he framed that growth as something the team will have to earn through the offseason process rather than something that arrives automatically because of talent alone.
The Rams context matters here because defensive identity is not only about schematics, it is also about communication and consistency. Curl, a key back-end presence, is positioned to influence how the defense handles what changes from week to week during training and preseason preparation. Even without naming particular coverages or schemes, the thrust of his comments points to a defense that is intent on playing with more certainty.
It also helps explain why Curl’s tone includes a deliberate caveat. In June, teams have not played games that test rotations under live-game pressure, and the details of communication often look cleaner in a controlled setting than they do against scripted timing, down-to-down adjustments, and late-game fatigue. Curl’s caution about promising too much reflects a recognition of that gap.
For Rams fans, the immediate takeaway is that the organization’s defensive standard is being framed early. Curl is indicating that internal expectations are rising, and that the players are thinking about what the defense can be rather than settling for vague progress. In the NFL, that kind of messaging matters because it sets a target for coaches and players during the weeks when responsibilities harden into habits.
What to watch next is how that tone translates into measurable improvement as the offseason continues. The clearest indicators will come from preseason and early regular-season execution, particularly whether the Rams can sustain pressure, make the simple plays consistently, and communicate cleanly in defensive packages.
For now, Curl’s comments function as a leadership checkpoint: the Rams’ defense is being treated as a priority in 2026, and Curl wants his unit to carry an aggressive, accountable mindset into the months when work becomes performance.
If the Rams do not immediately look like a finished defensive product, it will not necessarily contradict Curl’s message. It may simply confirm what he already implied: that June optimism is not the same thing as September execution, but it can still be the beginning of a plan.
