With Alaric Jackson’s availability potentially affected by legal proceedings, Los Angeles is reportedly exploring veteran options to keep its offensive line stable, including Jonah Williams as a swing-tackle possibility.
Los Angeles’ offensive line planning is entering a more complicated phase as the team navigates uncertainty around tackle Alaric Jackson. In a discussion of roster contingency planning, Yahoo Sports framed the situation as one where the Rams have to prepare for the possibility of a lengthy absence, even though the ultimate outcome of the pending matter is not known.
Jackson has been viewed as a starting-caliber piece at tackle, and his potential unavailability would force the Rams to make hard decisions about where to source continuity. The immediate need in that scenario is not simply replacing a body, but preserving protection quality and communication across the line so the rest of the scheme does not have to absorb a major learning curve midstream.
One name floated as an internal fallback is Jonah Williams, who has experience at both left and right tackle. In that framework, Williams would be used as a swing option, stepping in as the flexible answer should Jackson miss time, while also allowing the Rams to keep their starting configuration intact as much as possible.
Swing tackle roles matter in the NFL because offensive lines are built on matchups and habits. A tackle who has played both sides can be a stabilizer when week-to-week availability changes, and it can reduce the number of moving parts the coaching staff has to manage. That is especially relevant for teams that expect their protection calls and pass sets to be executed at a high level across different defensive looks.
The broader point of the roster planning exercise is that the Rams, like any organization facing uncertainty, do not want to wait for outcomes that could arrive after critical offseason or training-camp windows. Yahoo Sports’ reporting focused on free-agent targets that could be “starting-caliber” fits, pointing to the type of veteran profile teams often look for when they cannot guarantee one player’s availability.
It is also important to separate preparation from confirmation. The legal element tied to Jackson is described in the report as not fully resolved, meaning the Rams’ approach is contingency-based rather than outcome-based. In other words, the team’s evaluation may be driven by risk management and continuity planning, not a known timetable.
As the offseason progresses, the next items to watch are whether Los Angeles uses the tackle market to add depth with versatility, and how Williams is positioned within the line hierarchy. If the Rams make additional signings, pay attention to whether they emphasize tackle experience on both sides or a specialist role, because that distinction often indicates how the team expects to cover different game-day scenarios.
