THE APEX TIMES
A rough first inning left Texas chasing, but the Rangers answered with big swings, including Ty France’s grand slam, to complete a late-game comeback.
The Rangers’ 9-7 win over the Padres came with a familiar early test: before Texas even settled in, the game tilted away. Jacob deGrom’s first inning included uncharacteristic wildness, and the Padres took advantage immediately to build a 5-0 lead before the Rangers had much time to establish any rhythm.
That early deficit mattered because it forced Texas to play from behind against a lineup capable of converting pressure into runs. The longer the Rangers stayed in that hole, the more the game turned into an attrition problem rather than a trade of lead changes. Instead, Texas kept pressing, and the late response became the difference.
The turnaround was driven by the Padres’ own offensive surge and the Rangers’ counterpunches. Ty France delivered the kind of damage that can change the temperature of a game, hitting a grand slam after the Padres had already jumped ahead, extending the lead and making it clear Texas would need more than a single big inning to get back into contention.
Even with the grand slam amplifying the Padres’ advantage, the Rangers did not fold. They continued to put balls in play and take their cuts, converting moments into runs until the scoreline started to compress. In games like this, the balance often shifts when a chasing team’s at-bats remain productive rather than starting to run thin.
By the time the Rangers reached the finish, they had done enough to turn a 5-run hole into a two-run victory. A 9-7 final also reflects how tense the closing phases stayed, with both clubs still capable of scoring even after momentum swung.
For Texas, the practical takeaway is that their offense can absorb early pitching turbulence and still find a path back, but the broader concern is how quickly the game can spiral when the opponent’s first inning goes cleanly. For San Diego, the early execution was decisive, and France’s grand slam underlined the upside of that lineup when they get ahead early.
Next for both teams, the key questions are whether this game’s swing factors are repeatable. Texas will want to build on the patience and output that kept them in the contest, while the Padres will look to maintain the aggressiveness that produced runs so early, especially when the game’s first frame can set the entire tempo.
