Tampa Bay exercised the $3.1 million club option for shortstop Taylor Walls, confirming the team’s commitment to its infield defense headed into 2027.
The Rays exercised shortstop Taylor Walls’ club option for the 2027 season, setting his salary at $3.1 million, according to an team release.
Walls’ option decision followed his Gold Glove Award on Sunday night, a recognition the Rays framed as validation of his impact at shortstop. The release described his defensive strengths as including instincts, anticipation, knowledge, range, and reliability.
The team also explained that Walls’ contract situation was still the last remaining option-related decision from Tampa Bay’s group of pending contract clauses, after it had already exercised ace Drew Rasmussen’s $20 million club option earlier Saturday and declined mutual options with Nick Martinez and Cedric Mullins.
The Rays’ decision to keep Walls under club control matters beyond one player. His option year “was tacked onto” a contract that had already been added for this past season, and the team noted that the Monday move sets his salary for next year before he enters free agency ahead of the 2028 campaign.
Walls comes off the healthiest season of his career, playing 124 games, his highest total since appearing in 142 games in 2022. The release also cited his production value using Baseball-Reference’s Wins Above Replacement figure (3.5 WAR for the Rays in 2026), tied largely to his defensive work.
The option announcement arrived amid a broader offseason roster management day for Tampa Bay. The Rays also selected the contracts of reliever Alexander Alberto and outfielder Jack Suwinski to the 40-man roster, clarified other 40-man roster adjustments tied to the offseason rules around the 60-day injured list, and noted other minor transactions including freeing up space by moving Nick Madrigal to free agency and making Evan Reifert available through a trade for cash considerations.
