Rays win Game 4, turning ALCS into a best-of-three swing

Cleveland pushed back in the late innings, but Tampa Bay’s offense, led by Junior Caminero and powered by Yandy Díaz’s late two-run shot, forced a series reset with Game 5 ahead.

The Tampa Bay Rays leveled the ALCS at 2-2 with a 7-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 4 at Progressive Field on Saturday night. With Friday’s rainout pushing Game 4 back a day, the Rays used the extra time to respond, and they now guarantee the series will shift back to Tropicana Field for Game 6 on Monday.

Caminero provided the key spark, driving in the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the sixth inning. The rally started from a strong at-bat that the Rays say traveled 110.2 mph off his bat and landed well over a leaping José Ramírez.

Once Tampa Bay took the lead, the Rays kept pressing. Jonathan Aranda drove in a pair of runs, and Díaz sealed the outcome in the ninth with a two-run home run to the opposite field, turning a lead into a cushion.

Cleveland did not go quietly. The Guardians rallied in the seventh, highlighted by a Travis Bazzana home run and a run-scoring single from Brayan Rocchio. The inning also featured additional damage for Tampa Bay earlier in that same frame, including an RBI single from Aranda that scored a second run thanks to an error.

Defensively and physically, the Guardians played through discomfort late. Steven Kwan sustained a cut when he slid into first base, came out later for the next frame with gauze in his mouth, and the Guardians still tried to keep the ALCS within reach.

On the mound, Rays starter Nick Martinez set the tone early and stayed in control. Tampa Bay’s release credited him with 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball, with the only early damage coming on a Chase DeLauter RBI single in the first, and it also noted Martinez had thrown 13 scoreless innings against Cleveland during the regular season this year.

After Martinez exited, Freddy Peralta appeared in relief. Looking ahead to Game 5, the release said the Guardians planned to pitch Parker Messick on Sunday, while the Rays could counter with Drew Rasmussen.

With the series tied, the immediate storyline shifts to which team best handles the tighter, late-stage sequencing that postseason baseball magnifies. The Rays and Guardians already played a version of that script in Game 4, where a few critical swings and a single mistake mattered more than innings stacked evenly on both sides.

Why It Matters

  • Tying the ALCS at 2-2 forces the remaining games into a tighter best-of-three stretch, where momentum and late bullpen execution tend to carry greater weight.
  • By winning Game 4, the Rays guarantee at least one additional game in their home ballpark at Tropicana Field for Game 6.
  • The game reinforced the ALCS theme described by MLB as “airtight baseball,” where small errors and key extra-base hits can swing an otherwise even matchup.
  • The late sequence in Game 4, including Díaz’s ninth-inning homer, underscores how quickly a lead can turn into a deficit in postseason leverage innings.
