The former Oklahoma State deputy athletic director, who has been in that position since 2021, is taking a new top-tier role on the U.S. Naval Academy staff, adding another experienced administrator to the Midshipmen’s athletics leadership group.
Reid Sigmon has left Oklahoma State to join the U.S. Naval Academy’s athletics leadership staff, taking on a senior associate director of athletics role, according to Yahoo Sports. The move ends Sigmon’s tenure as Oklahoma State’s deputy athletic director, a job he held since 2021 and in which he served as a key lieutenant to the department’s athletic director, Chad Weiberg.
At Oklahoma State, the deputy athletic director position is typically a central management post for a major Division I program. While the public details of Sigmon’s specific responsibilities at OSU were not enumerated in the Yahoo report, the description of him as “Weiberg’s deputy athletic director” indicates he was a close operating partner in day-to-day administration and long-term department planning.
Sigmon’s arrival at Navy places him within the Naval Academy’s unique athletics environment, where the athletics department operates under the service academy’s standards and mission. The U.S. Naval Academy’s athletics leadership structure includes senior administrators who oversee broad program areas, and the senior associate director of athletics role is generally designed for high-level coordination across sports, compliance, and strategic operations.
The reported title is “senior associate director of athletics,” which suggests the Navy department views Sigmon as more than a functional add-on and instead as a senior figure capable of handling multiple leadership responsibilities. For a program that competes at the highest level of college football and across the full range of Midshipmen sports, leadership continuity and administrative experience matter as much as coaching in setting expectations and sustaining program infrastructure.
Navy’s football program and athletics brand are tightly connected to the Academy’s mission, and leadership changes in senior administration can affect everything from how departments align around recruiting priorities to how program resources are administered across sports. Even though this particular report focuses on the personnel move itself, the underlying sports implication is that Navy is investing in experienced NCAA athletics management as it plans for future cycles.
For Oklahoma State, the departure creates an opening in the deputy athletic director layer that has been staffed by Sigmon since 2021. That kind of change often leads to internal reorganization, a promoted replacement, or a new hire, particularly when the outgoing administrator has worked directly with the athletic director on departmentwide priorities.
What to watch next is how Navy defines Sigmon’s portfolio in his new role and whether Oklahoma State names a replacement that preserves the administration’s operational pace. The next concrete indicators will likely come from official athletic department announcements, department staff bios, and any organizational updates that clarify how senior leadership responsibilities are reassigned.
