Montreal’s search for a stronger second-line center spot is still a central need for the Canadiens, but a fresh report says they are not among the clubs currently connected to New York’s Vincent Trocheck.
A new report from Yahoo Sports says the Montreal Canadiens are not one of the teams currently pursuing New York Rangers center Vincent Trocheck as the league’s trade conversations continue. Trocheck has been discussed as one of the NHL’s most notable trade candidates, and his availability has drawn attention from multiple clubs looking for a center who can anchor a scoring-focused middle group.
According to the report, the Canadiens’ situation is part of why Trocheck’s name has come up in the broader conversation, even if Montreal is not presently categorized as a front-line bidder. The article frames the Canadiens’ roster need as an upgrade at their second-line center position, a role that typically functions as a bridge between top-end matchups and the team’s lower lines, and often becomes the difference between a stable five-on-five structure and an inconsistent one.
Trocheck, for his part, is a forward-center profile the Rangers can count on for two-way responsibilities while still producing offensive output in high-leverage situations. That combination is one reason he has remained prominent in trade speculation. The report’s key point, however, is timing and access. It indicates Montreal is not currently listed among the clubs in the mix, despite the team’s stated need for center help in the second group.
The gap between “team need” and “team pursuit” matters in NHL roster-building, especially during the late stages of the offseason when teams often refine their plans. A club may identify a target that fits a hole, but still decide not to pursue it if the price is too steep, if the fit is uncertain under a specific coaching style, or if internal options are viewed as closer than they appear from the outside.
For Montreal, the practical takeaway is that second-line center remains a watch item, regardless of whether Trocheck is the name being actively pursued at the moment. The Canadiens will still have to shape the forward group so that their best elements can be used consistently, and their midlines can carry responsibility against other teams’ top competition. When a team is missing that kind of stability at center, it can force difficult downstream decisions, including shifting wingers, changing defensive assignments, or compromising matchup planning.
This report also underscores how quickly NHL trade interest can change. Clubs can move from “not in the mix” to “connected” if availability shifts, if other offers fall apart, or if salary-cap planning creates a new pathway. Even without naming Montreal as an active bidder, the report implies that Trocheck’s type of skill set remains on the radar for teams across the league that are trying to strengthen their middle-six structure.
What to watch next is whether the Canadiens identify another specific center option to improve their second-line role, or whether their stance toward Trocheck changes as the market develops. If Montreal continues to pursue an upgrade, their actions in the days ahead could reveal whether the team is looking for a like-for-like replacement, a more specialized matchup center, or a player who can also stabilize the team’s power-play look. Either way, the central storyline for the Canadiens remains clear: finding a dependable second-line center, and doing so in a way that fits their broader roster plan.
