The former NBA center, ESPN studio analyst and 2007-08 champion is reportedly agreed to take over general manager duties for the SWAC program.
Jackson State men’s basketball is reportedly preparing for a front-office shift with Kendrick Perkins, the ESPN broadcaster and former NBA center, set to join the program as general manager. The move, reported by Yahoo Sports, would place Perkins, a 2007-08 NBA champion, in a key administrative role for the Tigers as they look to build and manage the roster around the demands of NCAA Division I competition.
Per the report, Perkins has agreed to become Jackson State’s general manager. The GM position in college basketball typically involves oversight of program operations tied to roster strategy, recruiting coordination, and basketball department planning, even if coaching responsibilities remain separate. How that division of labor will work at Jackson State will be central to understanding what changes, if any, the program is prioritizing.
Perkins is not new to basketball leadership, even if his current public profile has come through media. After his playing career, he has worked as a broadcaster, including time with ESPN. His NBA background matters for a college program because it can affect the way the team is perceived in recruiting circles, particularly with prospects who value relationships, evaluation history, and a clear message about development and opportunity.
Jackson State competes in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), where league positioning can have outsized consequences given how conference tournaments determine automatic qualification for postseason play. A general manager who brings an NBA championship perspective can shape how the program approaches player development and team identity, but the on-court results will still depend on coaching execution, roster fit, and recruiting outcomes over multiple cycles.
The report does not detail compensation, a start date, or specific authority over basketball decisions beyond the general manager title. Until Jackson State and Perkins provide confirmation or additional specifics, it is not possible to say whether Perkins will influence recruiting primarily through strategy and evaluation, or also through direct involvement in hiring and player-transaction decisions. Those are common differences in how GM roles operate across programs.
For Jackson State, the practical next step is how the athletic department and coaching staff integrate Perkins into its existing structure. The Tigers’ immediate offseason planning, including recruiting timelines and roster needs, will be where that integration becomes most visible. Fans and local observers will likely watch for changes in recruiting communication, staffing priorities in basketball operations, and whether the program’s stated goals align with Perkins’ experience and media-informed understanding of how talent is assessed.
If the agreement holds, Perkins’ move represents a notable cross-over between media and college athletics administration. It also underscores how programs increasingly look outside traditional coaching ranks to find leaders who can connect basketball expertise with program-building skills. Jackson State’s progress in the SWAC and the credibility it creates with recruits could reflect how effectively that transition is managed. Whether the hiring becomes a long-term stabilizer or a short-term staffing bridge will be determined by results over the next recruiting and season cycle.
