Multiple reports say MLB has put forward a set of draft proposals aimed at changing the path to pro baseball, including a plan to exclude high-school players from the draft and to reduce the event’s length.
Major League Baseball is reportedly considering a sweeping change to the amateur draft that would alter who can be selected and how long the draft runs. According to multiple reports carried by Yahoo Sports, MLB introduced a package of proposals this week that, if adopted, would eliminate high-school players from the draft, reduce the number of rounds, and stage a more formal process for international players.
The proposals carry a symbolic impact because the current draft system has long served as the gateway for elite prospects straight out of high school. Names such as Mike Trout, Manny Machado and Clayton Kershaw were drafted that way under the existing framework, and the reported plan would effectively end that pathway for future classes if the league’s intent is ultimately approved.
Beyond the high-school component, the reported overhaul would also restructure the draft’s calendar and scope. MLB is said to be aiming to cut rounds significantly, which would change how clubs distribute resources over the draft day and could compress the pool of drafted amateur talent. The league would be reshaping not just the rules of eligibility, but the economics of time and scouting emphasis that surround the event.
International prospect development is another centerpiece of the reporting. MLB is reportedly considering holding a formal draft for international players. That would represent a notable shift from the current system in which international talent is primarily acquired through signings under MLB’s international rules rather than through the annual domestic draft process. For clubs, a formal international mechanism could affect how front offices evaluate risk, manage budgets, and plan long-term roster-building.
The reports do not provide full details about timelines or which proposal elements would take effect first, and MLB’s internal process matters here. In baseball, even significant rule concepts typically move through league review, collective bargaining considerations, and commissioner-level governance before anything becomes binding. Until MLB issues official documentation or confirms the specific elements and voting status of any plan, the public picture remains incomplete.
If the high-school exclusion and draft-size reduction are real, the most immediate question would be what replaces the role the draft has traditionally played for teenagers. While the reports indicate an intent to exclude those players, they do not, in the available reporting, specify the replacement mechanism or how amateur eligibility and signing pathways would be handled for that age group. Likewise, a formal international draft would raise questions about how international signing rules would be integrated and how clubs would handle prospect development in the years leading up to selection.
