Kansas City added another arm to its pitching mix, landing Randy Dobnak from Seattle for cash considerations days after a separate trade for Connor Seabold.
The Kansas City Royals, in need of more pitching depth, acquired right-handed pitcher Randy Dobnak from the Seattle Mariners for cash considerations, the team announced June 18. The move highlights a mid-summer emphasis on strengthening the Major League roster, with Kansas City already reshaping its staff through recent transactions.
Dobnak is expected to immediately join the Royals organization on the Major League roster. Per the announcement, he will be added to the 40-man roster, a step that comes with additional roster maneuvering to ensure enough space for the new acquisition.
That juggling act has been a consistent theme for Kansas City this week. Just days earlier, the Royals acquired veteran Connor Seabold from the Toronto Blue Jays in a separate trade that included minor league pitcher Denis Samudio and cash considerations. With Seabold now in the fold, the Royals moved quickly again to add Dobnak, continuing a pattern of pursuing arms rather than waiting for internal options.
To create room for both new pitchers on the 40-man roster, Kansas City transferred pitchers Carlos Estévez and Cole Ragans to the 60-day Injured List. The team noted that Estévez had already been out for more than 60 days, while the Ragans move indicates he will miss additional time, at least through July 7.
For the Mariners, the decision to trade Dobnak for cash marks a shift in roster planning. For the Royals, it reflects a pragmatic approach: add usable pitching while managing the constraints of the 40-man roster and the availability timeline imposed by the injured list.
The Royals will now have two newly added pitchers on the Major League roster during a stretch where rotation stability and bullpen coverage often swing on matchups and availability. With Dobnak’s arrival following the Seabold acquisition, the next question is how Kansas City’s staff roles settle, particularly which pitchers move into higher-leverage bullpen usage or slot into rotation spot-start opportunities.
