Royals name Legends Global as owner’s representative for downtown ballpark project
Kansas City selected Legends Global to serve as the team’s advocate through design, budgeting, construction and risk control for a new open-air downtown stadium.
The Kansas City Royals have selected Legends Global to act as the owner’s representative for the team’s new downtown ballpark process, the club announced Thursday. The role is designed to protect the Royals’ interests across budgeting, construction schedules, quality and risk control, while coordinating as a liaison with project builders, architects and design partners.
The new ballpark is described by the Royals as an approximately 34,000-seat, open-air venue that will anchor an 85-acre, $3 billion mixed-use development at Crown Center. The project is being developed in partnership with Hallmark Cards, with the team linking the stadium to increased downtown activity and new visitor traffic.
The Royals said the selection followed key local milestones, including Kansas City Council approval of a tax increment financing plan and bonds to support the city’s $600 million commitment. The Royals also said the majority of the project is privately funded, and that groundbreaking is targeted for 2027.
Legends Global, according to the Royals, is the “premier partner” for live-event and venue brands and currently serves as owner’s representative on professional sports venue projects including the Tampa Bay Rays’ new venue work, the Dallas Mavericks’ work, and the Buffalo Bills’ Highmark Stadium.
The Royals’ release framed the selection as a way to bring baseball-stadium expertise and day-to-day advocacy to a sports-anchored downtown development of this scale, with Legends Global describing its team as a trusted advocate “from design through closeout.”
Why It Matters
- A new downtown ballpark is a major team-building and branding milestone, shaping the fan experience years before the first pitch.
- Owner’s representation decisions can affect how closely projects track budgets, schedules and design priorities, which in turn influences when the stadium can open.
- The stadium’s mixed-use footprint is positioned as a long-term economic driver for Kansas City, extending the franchise’s footprint beyond game days.
- The Royals’ next on-field era will eventually be played in a new venue, but the process now focuses on development governance and construction oversight rather than roster planning.
