Russian large-scale strike on Kyiv kills at least 13, injures 86, Kyiv mayor says

Authorities said the overnight attack using missiles and drones damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure across the Ukrainian capital, with emergency responders still working as the death toll could rise.

Russia launched a large-scale attack on Kyiv overnight into Thursday that killed at least 13 people and injured dozens, Kyiv officials said. Loud explosions shook the capital for hours, with many residents taking shelter in public transportation stations after early warnings were issued by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other officials.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in an update that 13 people were killed and 86 others were injured. The Kyiv City Military Administration’s head, Tymur Tkachenko, said damage was recorded in 30 locations, primarily residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said 20 residential buildings were damaged. The Ukrainian emergency service reported deploying nearly 500 personnel and 100 specialized vehicles, including a helicopter, to respond to the attack’s aftermath, search for victims, and assist residents whose homes were damaged.

According to CBS News, the attack involved ballistic and cruise missiles and drones. Russia’s Defense Ministry said the strikes hit what it described as key military plants in Kyiv, a characterization Kyiv did not accept in its public casualty and damage reporting.

Ukrainian officials also used the attack as an argument for urgent reinforcement of air defenses. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the strike “a night of horror” and urged allies not to delay supplying air defense systems and missiles, saying the death toll could rise as rescue teams continued their work. Zelenskyy also asked Washington for a license to make Patriot missiles, CBS News reported.

The scale of the strike and the continuing emergency response underscored ongoing risks to civilians in the capital, even as Ukrainian forces conduct long-range operations targeting Russian military sites and energy facilities. Kyiv authorities said the work of recovery and identification was continuing, and officials cautioned that further casualties were possible as rescue teams remained on the scene.

Why It Matters

  • The reported casualties and widespread damage affect families and communities across multiple Kyiv neighborhoods rather than a single site, increasing demands on local recovery and emergency systems.
  • Kyiv officials are linking the attack to immediate policy and procurement priorities for air defenses, which can shape allied decisions on timelines and transfers.
  • Russia’s stated claim that it targeted military plants, juxtaposed with Ukrainian civilian casualty reporting, highlights the contested information environment surrounding strike accountability.
  • Zelenskyy’s request to obtain a U.S. licensing path for Patriot missile production reflects the broader national-security and industrial capacity challenge for Ukraine’s long-term air-defense needs.
  • If the casualty count increases as searches continue, it may affect subsequent official reviews and public spending decisions related to repairs, displacement, and victim support.
