Rutgers’ Greg Schiano announces Zilan Williams will miss 2026 season, Canaan Edwards has left program

Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano used the early stage of fall camp to address two roster changes that will shape the Scarlet Knights’ defensive rotation in 2026. Schiano announced that senior defensive back Zilan Williams will miss the entire season due to a season-ending injury. In the same update, he said redshirt freshman edge rusher Canaan Edwards is no longer with the program, leaving Rutgers to adjust its defensive depth one month before its Sept. 3 opener against UMass at SHI Stadium.

Williams’ absence is the more immediate basketball-impacting loss on the field because it removes an experienced piece from Rutgers’ secondary during a period when coaches typically finalize coverages and personnel groupings. With a senior sidelined for the year, the staff must redistribute snaps among remaining defensive backs and more directly integrate younger players who have been practicing behind the established depth.

The other change affects Rutgers’ front seven, where Edwards’ departure takes away a pass-rushing option on the edge. As a redshirt freshman, Edwards was part of the group Rutgers would normally look to for gradual development into larger roles. His exit forces the defensive line and linebackers group to re-evaluate who can give consistent pressure, particularly early in the season when continuity matters.

Schiano’s remarks also highlight how camp timing matters for a program that is still building cohesion in August. Rutgers’ coaching staff will have to re-balance special teams reps as well, because personnel injuries and departures often cascade into kickoff and punt units. The adaptation period means the early weeks of camp become as much about placement and reps as they are about scheme.

For Rutgers, the defensive depth chart is not just a depth-chart exercise. The Scarlet Knights will need multiple defenders available for rotations across the full defensive snap count, including late-game situations where fatigue can expose mismatches. With Williams and Edwards both unavailable, Rutgers will likely lean more heavily on players who have been preparing to take on larger assignments than originally planned.

The Williams and Edwards updates also arrive as Rutgers works toward early-season stability. While a defensive unit can absorb one change through training-camp experimentation, two losses in different areas of the defense raise the odds that multiple positional battles will intensify, especially among the secondary and edge spots.

Going forward, the key questions for Rutgers are straightforward: which defenders emerge as the next wave at defensive back, how the staff replaces Edwards’ edge rushing responsibilities, and whether Rutgers can sustain performance in the early nonconference portion of the schedule while camp continues to produce a settled rotation.
