The D-backs’ No. 1 prospect, back at Triple-A after a recent big-league look, delivered a long home run off a rehabbing Germán Márquez, a reminder that his power is translating when the swing is there.
Ryan Waldschmidt’s home-run drought at the big-league level lasted longer than he and Arizona likely wanted, but his first game back at Triple-A brought an immediate correction. In the D-backs’ farm action, the organization’s top prospect connected for a roundtripper in his return, and the pitch came from Germán Márquez, who was working his way back while rehabbing at the moment.
Márquez’s presence added a layer of relevance to the moment. He is a known big-league starter when healthy, and Waldschmidt facing a rehabbing veteran rather than solely a fringe call-up look matters because it is a better proxy for MLB-level run prevention. According to the D-backs/MLB report, the homer landed against Márquez in that first Triple-A game after Waldschmidt’s recent taste of the majors.
The timing also frames what the D-backs are monitoring. MLB had described Waldschmidt’s earlier look as one in which “a home run eluded” him over the past month or so. That is a clear development storyline, even without the full statistical breakdown. When a hitter with recognized upside goes through a stretch without the signature power outcome at the highest level, returning to Triple-A is often less about demotion and more about getting a specific swing plan back into a repeatable rhythm.
While the report centers the homer and the matchup, it also indicates why Arizona continues to value Waldschmidt as a top-of-the-depth-chart player. The organization positioned him as its No. 1 prospect, and the decision to bring him back into the Triple-A environment after a big-league stint underscores that his role is still developmentally active. The D-backs are not treating the power as a lost cause after one or two attempts at the majors; they are testing how quickly he can reclaim the exact thing his skill set suggests: lift and damage.
There is, however, a caveat that comes with any single game storyline. A homer off a rehabbing pitcher is a real datapoint, but it is not a full sample size for MLB readiness. Pitchers still have to progress through their rehab plans, and hitters still need consistent outcomes across multiple looks. Still, the immediate nature of the return, and the fact that it came against a recognizable name, gives the performance extra weight inside the organization.
What to watch next is how Waldschmidt strings together similar contact quality across subsequent at-bats and whether Arizona’s internal timeline shifts as a result. If the power shows up again while he settles into a regular Triple-A pace, it strengthens the argument for another big-league window. At the same time, the D-backs will also track how Márquez responds in rehabbing work, because his availability impacts what level of pitching those hitters are facing during his return arc.
