With the NHL draft and free agency arriving in quick succession, Buffalo’s offseason planning hinges on whether Alex Tuch reaches a new agreement or moves on. Until that question is answered, the Sabres’ options in trade season remain shaped by one reality: they may need to replace the scoring they get on the wing.
The Buffalo Sabres are entering the final stretch of the offseason window with one major question looming over their top-six plans. As the NHL moves through trade-season activity ahead of the NHL Draft, and then toward the formal start of free agency on July 1, a central storyline in Buffalo’s planning is the contract situation involving pending unrestricted free agent Alex Tuch.
According to Yahoo Sports, a “lengthy impasse” between Tuch’s representatives and Sabres general manager Jarmo Kekalainen has left insiders expecting Tuch will sign elsewhere. The report ties that expectation to a “considerable gap” between what Tuch’s side is seeking and what Buffalo is willing to pay, making the outcome unlikely to be decided quietly in the background.
If Tuch does not return, the immediate roster challenge is straightforward. The Sabres would need a way to replace the scoring output and wing production they have relied on at the NHL level. That need would push Buffalo toward exploring multiple avenues, including trade-market options for established scoring help, rather than waiting to rebuild everything in-house through the draft and internal development.
The timing also matters. The same report frames Buffalo’s decision-making as running on a compressed calendar: trade-season movement leading into the draft in roughly two weeks, followed by the start of free agency on July 1. That rhythm typically forces teams to make real choices about whether to pursue deals that can be completed now, or whether to preserve flexibility in case a core player ultimately stays.
Even with the contract uncertainty, the Sabres are not limited to one plan. The report characterizes Buffalo’s offseason approach as potentially taking “a number of different ways,” which usually reflects the trade-offs teams face when they anticipate losing a key player versus when they hold out hope of a return long enough to keep their internal options open.
At this point, the most important caveat is that this is still a planning and expectation story, not a confirmed transaction. Until Buffalo and Tuch resolve their situation, the wing-market picture will remain fluid, and any potential moves by the Sabres should be understood as contingencies built around the same unresolved variable.
What to watch next is whether the contract talks show signs of narrowing quickly enough to change expectations, or whether Buffalo’s front office starts treating a Tuch departure as the working assumption and begins prioritizing immediate scoring help on the wing through the trade market and, later, through free agency.
