The Buffalo Sabres are not closing the book on Prokhor Poltapov, even as the years abroad pile up. According to recent reporting, Buffalo continues to monitor the Russian forward, the same player who has become the NHL club’s most persistent “what if” among prospects, largely because he has never taken a shift in North America.

Poltapov was selected 33rd overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, and since then his professional career has stayed in Russia with CSKA Moscow. The long separation between drafting and an NHL debut is at the center of why his name keeps resurfacing: Buffalo holds his NHL rights, but a player’s decision about when, or whether, to leave can ultimately determine how fast those rights turn into roster reality.

The new complication is timing. He is reportedly under a KHL commitment that extends into the 2026-27 season, after signing a two-year extension with CSKA. That matters because European prospects who choose continuity often do not arrive until later in their development arc, when they and the team drawing them in believe the jump will be productive. In Poltapov’s case, the reported extension pushes the window farther out and reduces the likelihood of an immediate transfer plan.

Buffalo’s own interest has been described as ongoing. The Athletic’s Matthew Fairburn, as quoted in the Yahoo Sports report, wrote that the Sabres remain in contact and show interest, while also stressing that it is difficult to know what Poltapov will decide. Fairburn described Poltapov’s style as hard and heavy, willing to get into “tough areas” of the ice, a skill set that can fit NHL team preferences even if the setting of his development has stayed overseas.

On the production side, the profile remains consistent rather than explosive. Poltapov is reported to have produced back-to-back 40-point seasons for CSKA Moscow, following a 2024-25 campaign that ended with 17 goals and 23 assists, then a 2025-26 run of 16 goals and 24 assists while appearing in all 68 games. For a team weighing the cost of waiting, those numbers provide reassurance that his game is translating within the KHL environment, even if the next step is not yet in place.

Still, the gap between KHL success and NHL readiness is never purely statistical. The reported steadiness may support Buffalo’s patience, but it also underlines why an eventual decision point becomes unavoidable. The longer Poltapov remains in Russia, the more Buffalo has to plan as though his arrival could be delayed again, which affects how the organization manages its organizational depth, especially with prospects who might be ready sooner.

What to watch next is whether Buffalo’s monitoring turns into a concrete transition plan, such as an announced move to North America when the KHL agreement reaches a natural breakpoint.
