THE APEX TIMES
New Orleans added depth across special teams, receiver and quarterback, while making corresponding cuts on defense, the secondary and at kicker.
The New Orleans Saints used the start of the offseason to reshape parts of their roster, announcing that the club has signed kicker Tanner Brown, wide receiver Jalen Cropper and quarterback Hunter Dekkers. The moves, announced by Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis, reflect typical post-minicamp roster management, with the team looking to create competition at key spots before the start of training camp.
Brown’s addition gives New Orleans another option at kicker as the offseason work moves forward. While the team did not provide additional context on current kicking group status in the announcement, the transaction itself indicates the Saints wanted to add a fresh body to the competition and depth chart heading into the next phase of preparation.
The Saints also signed Cropper, adding a wide receiver to the organization’s receiving group. For the Saints, that matters beyond the position label. Late-spring signings often influence how teams build their depth at outside receiver and in sub packages, including the ability to provide reliable routes and presence both in the intermediate passing game and in situational downs.
On offense, Dekkers was brought in at quarterback. Quarterback additions in this window are usually about developmental depth and evaluation, particularly as coaches establish offseason plans for third-string roles, practice reps and potential preseason opportunities.
In corresponding roster moves, New Orleans waived defensive tackle Coziah Izzard and defensive back DaShawn Jones. The Saints also waived kicker Mason Shipley and wide receiver Damien Alford, listing Alford as waived/injured. These cuts suggest the team is trimming spots to accommodate the three new signings and to set a roster that fits offseason practice needs and roster limits.
The release frames the transactions as a coordinated set of moves rather than standalone additions. That approach is common for NFL front offices, especially in June, when teams can use roster flexibility to audition players, adjust positional groups, and make room for incoming offseason talent.
What to watch next is how these players fit into the Saints’ offseason evaluation plan. Brown’s role will hinge on kickoff, field-goal and practice-day consistency. Cropper’s chances likely revolve around route running and catching in timing-based drills. Dekkers’ standing will depend on how quickly he can grasp the team’s protection and passing concepts as reps scale up.
For now, the roster changes are the confirmed headline items from the Saints’ announcement. Any further moves, including potential additional signings or claim activity from other teams after waivers, will clarify the final composition of the Saints’ offseason depth chart.
