SandboxAQ’s AQCat for Catalyst Discovery Becomes Generally Available in AWS Marketplace

AQCat, SandboxAQ’s large quantitative model aimed at helping firms find and screen chemical catalysts, can now be deployed through Amazon SageMaker after moving into general availability on AWS Marketplace.

SandboxAQ said its AQCat system, designed to accelerate catalyst discovery, is now generally available in AWS Marketplace, giving customers a faster path to try and deploy the model in cloud environments.

AQCat is described by SandboxAQ as a Large Quantitative Model (LQM) focused on catalyst discovery. Large quantitative models are AI systems trained to work with structured scientific and numerical relationships rather than only text, with the goal of supporting complex engineering decisions such as which chemical candidates are most promising.

The company’s announcement also said AQCat is deployable through Amazon SageMaker. SageMaker is Amazon Web Services’ managed platform for building, training, and deploying machine learning models, which matters to enterprise users because it reduces the custom infrastructure and integration work required to move from experimentation to production workflows.

SandboxAQ’s framing ties the release to enterprise chemical R&D. Catalyst discovery is a long-running bottleneck in industries that depend on chemical processing, including energy, materials, and manufacturing, because finding effective catalysts often requires extensive simulation and laboratory validation. By packaging AQCat for deployment in AWS, SandboxAQ is aiming to shorten the time from model evaluation to operational use for teams that already run data and compute on AWS.

For Amazon, the move reinforces a recurring AWS strategy: make specialized AI tools easier for businesses to adopt by offering them in AWS Marketplace and pairing them with SageMaker for deployment. AWS Marketplace is designed to let customers subscribe to software and AI components and then run them within AWS account environments, while SageMaker provides the deployment and operations layer.

The announcement did not provide additional performance benchmarks or technical details in the material available for this review, such as expected accuracy improvements, cost-to-run estimates, throughput metrics, or timelines for specific Fortune 500 programs mentioned in the headline.

It also did not disclose pricing, contract terms, or the scope of support for regulators, security certifications, or data-handling commitments beyond the general availability positioning. As with many third-party model offerings, customers are likely to need to validate fit for their specific chemistry datasets and workflows before relying on results for downstream decisions.

What to watch next is whether SandboxAQ and AWS publish more details around deployment requirements, integration options in SageMaker, and any case studies that quantify impact on catalyst screening and experimental iteration. Enterprises evaluating AQCat will likely focus on reproducibility, how model inputs map to their lab or simulation data, and whether the output integrates cleanly with existing R&D pipelines.

Why It Matters

  • Moving AQCat into general availability on AWS Marketplace lowers the friction for enterprises that already use AWS to adopt specialized AI for scientific workflows.
  • Deployability through SageMaker indicates a route toward operational deployment, not just experimentation, which can matter for teams that need repeatable model runs.
  • The focus on catalyst discovery highlights a growing market for domain-specific AI aimed at complex scientific screening problems.
  • If AQCat is adopted broadly, it could increase competitive pressure in AI tooling for chemistry and materials R&D, including other vendors packaging models for AWS ecosystems.
