The veteran infielder has been removed from the Dodgers’ roster picture after being designated for assignment and subsequently clearing waivers, a move tied to Tommy Edman’s return.
Santiago Espinal is headed into free agency after clearing waivers and electing to reject an outright assignment, according to the MLB transaction log as reported by MLB Trade Rumors. The move follows a Dodgers roster decision in which Espinal was designated for assignment after Tommy Edman returned from injury.
For Los Angeles, the decision reflects a common midseason roster balancing act: when a player returns from the injured list, teams often have to make space on the 26-man roster. In this case, Edman’s activation created room that allowed the Dodgers to move Espinal off the active roster, then progress to waivers.
Espinal’s waiver history this season adds context to why the outcome matters for both sides. MLB Trade Rumors reports that Espinal has been outrighted twice already this year, including at least one instance tied to the return of Kiké Hernández from the injured list. In that earlier situation, Hernández returned, but then quickly went back down with injury, again reshaping the Dodgers’ options at the infield and utility spots.
Once a player clears waivers, a team can typically outright the player to the minors if the player does not have the ability to refuse and elect free agency. MLB Trade Rumors’ report indicates Espinal had the right to choose, and he used it. By electing free agency, Espinal becomes available to any club, which can be especially valuable for a veteran who has shown he can accept a range of roster roles.
From the Dodgers’ perspective, the non-tendered nature of this outcome is more important than any label. They retain flexibility to carry the players they believe best fit the current mix of health and lineup needs, while Espinal’s departure creates a clearer path for the rest of the infield and utility depth to settle into defined roles.
For the immediate baseball calendar, free agency is the next step for Espinal, and his destination will likely depend on how other clubs view their own infield depth and the likelihood of additional roster openings. Teams in need of a flexible middle-infield or utility option can now negotiate without relying on waiver outcomes.
The roster picture around this Dodgers move will continue to be worth watching because it is directly connected to the health and availability of Edman and Hernández. If either player’s status changes again, Los Angeles will have to revisit its transaction options, whether that means calling up depth, rebalancing the bench, or making further DFA decisions. For now, Espinal’s election of free agency closes one chapter, and it opens another for his next team.
