Seahawks Add Josh Ross to Practice Squad, Bolstering Off-Ball Linebacker Depth
Seattle signed linebacker Josh Ross to its practice squad Wednesday, creating additional special-teams and off-ball depth at a position group affected by multiple injuries.
The Seattle Seahawks signed linebacker Josh Ross to their practice squad on Wednesday, adding a second off-ball linebacker option behind the team’s current depth group.
To make room for Ross, Seattle released rookie guard Evan Beentsen, who had been on the practice squad after signing out of Northwestern last month.
Ross entered the NFL as an undrafted player out of Michigan in 2022. He spent more than two seasons with the Baltimore Ravens under Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald before being claimed by Seattle during the 2024 season.
Most recently, Ross spent time with the Minnesota Vikings, including time on the practice squad last season and time in training camp and the preseason with the club in 2026.
Across three seasons, Ross has appeared in 22 games, with his work primarily on special teams. In 2024, he played 10 games for Seattle, according to the Seahawks.
Seattle noted the signing is meant to deepen linebacker depth with Drake Thomas, Chazz Surratt, and Tyrice Knight all listed on this week’s injury report, and with Jimmy Ciarlo and the rest of the Seahawks’ practice-squad linebacker group providing additional support.
Why It Matters
- The addition increases practice-squad depth at off-ball linebacker, a group Seattle described as affected by injuries this week.
- Ross’s special-teams experience gives Seattle a more plug-in option for offseason-style preparation as the season progresses.
- With several linebackers listed on the injury report, the move indicates Seattle is prioritizing coverage and substitution readiness for the second unit.
- Roster churn on the practice squad, including Beentsen’s release, highlights how quickly teams adjust their depth charts in response to health needs.
