Rams coach Sean McVay said Trent McDuffie will play inside often, a positioning choice that could shape how Los Angeles uses Emmanuel Forbes on the boundary as the team builds its secondary rotation.
The Los Angeles Rams’ secondary picture just got more complicated, and it starts with a decision about where Trent McDuffie will play. In comments reported by Yahoo Sports on June 18, Sean McVay outlined how he expects to use McDuffie, saying the cornerback will line up inside often. That approach, according to the same report, has direct knock-on effects for Emmanuel Forbes’s role, with the implication that Forbes will be a starter as part of the Rams’ boundary plan.
On the surface, the McDuffie-to-the-inside idea sounds like personnel confirmation: McDuffie is being asked to operate where quarterbacks often test the seam and slot matchups, rather than only on the outer third. McVay’s emphasis on interior snaps matters because it changes how a defense pairs coverage responsibilities. When a player plays inside more frequently, the outside spots can be staffed differently, including with another defensive back whose best moments come against outside receivers and in man coverage situations.
The report also frames the conversation around skepticism that preceded the move. Yahoo Sports notes that the author had questioned the fit of McDuffie for the Rams in the days before the trade was reported, arguing that he can profile as a slot-oriented piece. While that critique was made before the Rams’ plan was fully explained, McVay’s comments suggest the organization is leaning into that trait rather than trying to force McDuffie into a traditional outside-only corner mold.
Forbes’s name has become central to the “how” of the Rams’ plan, too. The Yahoo Sports report states that McVay’s intention for McDuffie being inside often would, in effect, make Forbes a starter. That kind of structural lineup shift is common when teams adjust who carries the slot and who handles the boundary. If McDuffie is expected to take on more interior work, the Rams can prioritize Forbes’s matchups on the outside and in coverage packages where the defense wants a corner to play aggressively in route disruption and space.
At a roster level, this is less about a single matchup and more about the Rams’ defensive identity. Modern NFL defenses often build their coverage around flexible personnel. The Rams appear to be leaning into an approach where the defense can disguise who is “really” manned up and where the slot responsibility comes from, using McDuffie’s inside usage as an organizing principle.
Still, deploying a corner “inside often” is not the same thing as committing to one static role. Even when coaches speak in general terms, snap counts can vary by opponent and by game script. Slot-heavy offenses may push the Rams toward more interior work from McDuffie, while teams that operate more with outside speed could shift the distribution of snaps. The key question for the Rams will be whether this plan sustains coverage integrity across different formations, not just early reps in the offseason.
What to watch next is how the Rams translate this deployment concept into weekly defensive packages. Media access and practice reporting usually reveals which matchups trigger McDuffie’s interior responsibilities, how often Forbes stays on the boundary, and whether the Rams use other defensive backs to bridge the gap when personnel groupings change. If the team’s execution matches McVay’s intention, it would suggest the trade fit is less questionable than some early observers thought. If not, it could leave the Rams scrambling to balance coverage assignments as the regular season approaches.
