THE APEX TIMES
Nearly a week after two earthquakes hit parts of Venezuela, officials and rescuers are still working to locate missing people amid damaged homes and scattered rubble, as more than 1,700 deaths are reported and tens of thousands remain unaccounted for.
Rescue teams in Venezuela continued searching for survivors nearly a week after twin earthquakes struck the country, as authorities reported that the death toll has risen to more than 1,700. CBS News reported that rescuers are still going through collapsed structures, working under difficult conditions as families wait for word on missing relatives.
The earthquakes occurred less than a week before the CBS News report published June 30, 2026, and the search is now entering a prolonged phase where the goal shifts to locating survivors and recovering the dead. The report described tens of thousands of people as still missing, with many families dependent on rescue workers to reach areas where roads, utilities, and access routes have been disrupted by the damage.
In the affected communities, rescuers have been moving through rubble and damaged buildings, where survivors may be located in voids or partially collapsed spaces. The CBS News video focused on the practical difficulties of recovery operations, including the pace of searches, the need to coordinate responders, and the challenge of maintaining coverage across multiple locations following two separate shocks.
As the search continues, humanitarian needs have grown alongside the casualty count. A prolonged disaster response typically increases the demand for temporary shelter, medical support, and basic supplies for people displaced or unable to return to unsafe buildings. The report emphasized that the scale of missing persons has made the process slower and more complex, even as teams keep operating around the clock where possible.
The timeline has also affected how information can be verified. In the early days after large-scale disasters, numbers can change as damage assessments expand and missing-person reports are consolidated. CBS News reported the latest available totals at the time of publication, including the more than 1,700 deaths and the ongoing search for survivors, while acknowledging the size of the missing-person problem.
With nearly a week passing since the earthquakes, officials and responders face decisions about resource allocation between active searches, clearing operations, and preparations for longer-term recovery. The next steps are likely to include continued retrieval efforts in the hardest-hit zones, further coordination among emergency responders, and updated public accounting as teams broaden their access to damaged neighborhoods.
