San Jose traded for a proven NHL defender and a higher draft slot, swapping with the Buffalo Sabres in a move aimed at reshaping both teams’ near-term development plans.
The San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Michael Kesselring from the Buffalo Sabres in a pick swap that also moved value within the upcoming NHL Draft. According to Yahoo Sports, Buffalo sent Kesselring, a 26-year-old defenseman, along with the 27th overall pick to San Jose in exchange for the 20th overall selection.
For Buffalo, the trade represents a decision to convert a roster piece and a later first-round slot into an earlier draft position. Moving down three spots from 20 to 27 suggests the Sabres preferred to keep the difference in draft valuation on their side, while also choosing to change their defensive mix by dealing Kesselring.
San Jose’s side of the deal is built around two levers. The first is the draft element, where obtaining the 20th overall pick provides the Sharks a better chance at landing a prospect they target higher in the board. The second is the roster element, with the addition of Kesselring as an NHL-caliber defense option.
In the NHL, a mid-first-round move is rarely just about one player. Teams often use the jump to secure a specific tier of prospects, especially when the draft is viewed as having a cluster of players who grade similarly but are valued differently based on team priorities. By pairing that draft repositioning with a defenseman acquisition, San Jose is treating the transaction as both a present and a future investment.
Buffalo’s decision to move on from Kesselring, as described in the report, also raises broader questions about how the Sabres want their defensive group to look in the coming seasons. Without additional details on internal roster plans or how Kesselring fits beyond this exchange, the safest conclusion is that Buffalo preferred to shift resources toward the draft while changing personnel on defense.
For the Sharks, the practical impact is clearer: they are starting the post-trade offseason with a defenseman in hand and a higher draft selection than they would have had without the swap. The next test will come when the draft selections are made, because the 20th and 27th picks can end up being the difference between similar prospects and the one player a club is most determined to secure.
What to watch next is how San Jose balances its defensive outlook once Kesselring is in the organization, and how Buffalo’s earlier pick influences the shape of its rebuilding or retooling through the draft class.
As always with draft-adjacent trades, the full meaning of the deal will become clearer only after selections are confirmed and players begin to develop within each team’s system. Still, the core takeaway from the report is that San Jose valued the 20th pick enough to give up the path to the 27th slot while bringing Kesselring into the mix.
