San Jose pairs a new forward option with a higher 2026 NHL Draft selection, completing a pick-for-player move with Boston.
The San Jose Sharks have acquired forward Andre Gasseau from the Boston Bruins and moved up in the 2026 NHL Draft as part of a trade that reshaped both clubs’ draft positioning. The deal sends the Bruins’ 120th overall pick in the 2026 draft to San Jose, while Boston receives San Jose’s 104th and 157th overall selections in the same draft.
Gasseau, 22, enters the Sharks organization after being drafted by Boston in the 2021 NHL Draft. The Yahoo Sports report says the Bruins selected him 213th overall in 2021. From there, his path has included junior and development stops, including early hockey in California with the Los Angeles Jr. Kings before progressing through the USHL and the US National Team Development Program (USNTDP).
For San Jose, the trade is essentially a two-part investment. First, it adds a forward prospect they can evaluate within their system. Second, it gives the Sharks a higher draft slot, which typically matters more in a draft where teams often prioritize upside and quicker-to-project differences between selections in the middle rounds. By trading for the 120th pick, San Jose is also accepting the cost of dropping from the 104th selection, and moving its later second asset from 157 down to no longer being held by the team as part of this specific exchange.
Boston, in turn, is converting a player and a pick into two selections at different points in the first-to-mid range of the draft. While the Yahoo report does not provide details beyond the pick swap, that structure generally gives a team more opportunities to add depth across multiple development tracks. It is also a common approach for contenders or rebuilding clubs looking to increase the probability of landing the kind of prospect they want by spreading selections.
The timeline of the transaction matters as well. With the report dated June 19, the Sharks and Bruins are completing an adjustment in the lead-up to the 2026 NHL Draft, when teams finalize how they want to build their next class. In trades like this, the key question is rarely only “who is better today,” but instead “who fits the next roster timeline.” For the Sharks, that means integrating Gasseau’s profile as a young forward while also taking advantage of the improved draft position.
Gasseau’s age positions him as a prospect still early enough for a jump, but old enough that both organizations will expect measurable progress. The report frames him as a California native who developed through recognized U.S. pathways, including USHL and the USNTDP. Those steps are often used as indicators of where a player’s development has been heading, even though the trade itself does not guarantee NHL readiness at a particular point in the future.
With this deal, both teams have made a clear statement about their priorities for the 2026 draft. San Jose is buying a prospect plus a higher pick, while Boston is maximizing the number of draft entries it can deploy. The next thing to watch is how each club’s scouting staff grades the trade in terms of role potential for the forward, and how the Sharks ultimately use the 104th and 157th selections they receive from the Bruins, or how the Bruins turn their acquired pick capital into multiple prospects.
