The left-hander, who joined the Nationals on a two-year deal last offseason, has returned to Japan after being released and signing with Nippon Professional Baseball’s Yomiuri Giants.
Shinnosuke Ogasawara will continue his professional career in Japan after signing with the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball, according to a report published Thursday. The move closes the chapter on his time within the Washington Nationals organization, where he was most recently assigned to Double-A before being granted his release.
Ogasawara’s path to Japan began in the 2024-25 offseason, when the Nationals agreed to a two-year, $3.5 million free agent contract. The arrangement was significant for Washington as it looked to add depth to its pitching pipeline and evaluate an experienced left-handed arm in an MLB-adjacent environment.
In the days leading up to the announcement, the Nationals released Ogasawara after he spent time in their Double-A system. The report indicates he was in that level of competition at the time and then received his release on Monday, clearing the way for him to sign elsewhere.
With the Giants, Ogasawara is expected to provide another left-handed option as Japan’s top league continues to refine its mix of domestic pitching and returning players with international experience. Yomiuri’s roster construction often values pitchers who can handle high-leverage innings and the pressure of consistently competing for titles in the Central League.
The financial and contractual details in the report focus on his earlier Nationals agreement, not the terms of his Giants deal. That means the immediate baseball storyline is about role and fit rather than a headline payroll number. Still, the timing matters. A quick exit after an offseason signing typically indicates that a club and player have reached different conclusions about where development and opportunity are headed.
Ogasawara’s 2024-25 season line cited by the report provides the clearest statistical snapshot associated with his MLB bid. He posted a 3.12 ERA across 144 1/3 innings, a workload that suggests Washington believed he could contribute over a full slate of starts rather than operating primarily in relief or in limited, matchup-driven appearances.
As he transitions back to Japan, the primary questions will be how quickly he can adjust to NPB hitters and game planning, and what type of managerial trust he earns early in the season. Left-handers often carry specific expectations around pitch shape, command, and the ability to disrupt timing, so the next spring and early regular-season usage patterns will likely be telling.
For the Nationals, the release is a reminder of how fluid organizational pitching plans can be, even after a multi-year investment. For the Giants, the signing is a reminder that NPB clubs remain active in the global talent market, seeking pitchers who can bring both innings depth and a professional resume shaped by MLB-level competition. The next development to watch is where Ogasawara lands on the Giants’ pitching depth chart once the team’s early planning locks in.
