Shohei Ohtani marks Father’s Day early after birth of second child

Shohei Ohtani’s Father’s Day celebration arrived a day early, with the Los Angeles Dodgers star announcing that his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, has given birth to the couple’s second child. Ohtani left the team Friday so he could be with Tanaka, and the birth occurred Saturday, June 20.

Ohtani, a two-way centerpiece for the Dodgers, shared the news through social media on Saturday. The announcement framed the moment as a family milestone timed closely to the holiday, with the broader storyline for baseball now shifting from the field to Ohtani’s personal offseason in-season life.

From the Dodgers’ perspective, the timing matters for roster and game-day planning, particularly for a player whose schedule and workload are already tightly managed as both a hitter and pitcher. Even when a player is not on a mound, his presence and routine can influence day-to-day decisions, travel logistics, and how the club balances playing time and bullpen availability.

There is no indication in the reported account of any baseball-related complication stemming from the birth. What is clear is that Ohtani made family the priority, traveling away from the team for the key window around the delivery and then posting the update shortly after it happened.

The second child adds another chapter to a widely followed Dodgers era for Ohtani, whose profile has grown beyond baseball into a global sports conversation. For fans, the timing also serves as a reminder that even the most high-profile athletes keep personal milestones at the center of the calendar.

What to watch next is how the Dodgers integrate Ohtani’s return to normal team routines, including whether he maintains his typical offensive tempo and how the club handles any pitch-management considerations in the days immediately following the announcement. For now, the only confirmed development is the family news and Ohtani’s decision to be away from the team for the delivery.
