Skubal tosses five scoreless in High-A rehab start, Tigers eye next-week return

Detroit’s rebuilding-from-the-back part of the season got a jolt on Sunday, as Tarik Skubal turned a High-A rehab start into a clean statement: five scoreless innings and six strikeouts for West Michigan against the Dayton Dragons. The Tigers’ big-league club was finishing an ALDS rematch series at Comerica Park with Jack Flaherty and the team trying to hold off Seattle, but the organization’s most important pitching “next step” was being handled just hours away in Grand Rapids. Skubal retired the first 15 hitters he faced, and his line was built on swing-and-miss velocity and sharp secondary work, with 16 swings and misses recorded across his outing.

Skubal’s appearance came about a month and a day after nanoscopic surgery removed a loose body from his left elbow. Detroit’s plan, as described before his rehab began, centered on controlled ramp-up work, including simulated games over the prior two weeks. Earlier reporting also pegged the procedure date to May 6 and framed this rehab start as the first minor-league appearance since 2023. The common thread for any late-spring return from elbow surgery is not only performance on the mound, but how the body responds after the inning-by-inning grind is done, and Skubal’s sharp start suggested the step forward was real.

In the first inning, Skubal needed just eight pitches, all strikes, to retire Dayton in order, including a pair of three-pitch strikeouts. He struck out the leadoff hitter and then used a 97 mph fastball to fan Reds prospect Carlos Sanchez. He followed by locating 98 mph to set down top Reds prospect Alfredo Duno. After recording two more strikeouts in a 1-2-3 second inning, Skubal worked through traffic, allowing a two-out single in the third on Victor Acosta’s at-bat and then the only other baserunner of the day on a fifth-inning ground ball from Jacob Friend, who beat Bryce Rainer’s throw from shortstop.

Detroit also made a logistical decision that mattered for the rehab timeline. The Tigers placed Skubal with High-A West Michigan instead of Triple-A Toledo because of weather considerations, with the Grand Rapids forecast viewed as more favorable than the conditions in Des Moines, Iowa, where Toledo’s series finale had been canceled due to rain. In addition to limiting travel wear, the arrangement offered a shorter drive from Detroit while giving the pitcher a workload target. Skubal’s work included continuing into the later innings before heading to the bullpen to get near his around-75-pitch objective.

The reason Sunday’s minor-league work carried so much weight is that Detroit’s next-week swing in the AL Central is framed internally as pivotal. Tigers management has linked Skubal’s rehab progress to a potential return next weekend, when Detroit visits Cleveland for a series that could influence the team’s ability to climb back into playoff contention. In other words, this was not a rehab appearance in isolation. It was one piece of a sprint toward rotation stability, timed against an opponent whose own health and depth can turn a few starts into an extended runway or a setback.

Skubal’s importance is also historical, not just current. The Tigers left-hander is the reigning American League Cy Young winner, coming off back-to-back Cy Young seasons, and he was among Detroit’s most impactful starters earlier this year. An AP report cited him as 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in seven starts before the rehab assignment, with 45 strikeouts and six walks over 43 1/3 innings. Manager A.J. Hinch had expressed hope that the Tigers could get by with minimal delay, saying on Friday, “Hopefully it’s a one-[start] stint, and he can come back to the big leagues.”

The next thing to watch is how Skubal’s arm feels and how Detroit advances him through the usual progression after a live rehab outing. A strong rehab start does not automatically eliminate risk, but Sunday’s performance gave the Tigers a measurable result: efficient first-batter dominance, limited baserunners, and a controlled workload plan executed in a setting chosen for weather and proximity. If the follow-up steps go as expected, Skubal would be positioned for a meaningful rotation return during the Tigers’ Cleveland stretch, where the payoff matters as much for playoff math as for pitching rhythm.
