South African officials did say they were investigating a killing involving a different Ghanaian man, described as occurring in a separate part of Cape Town. Police said a 35-year-old Ghanaian, Kwabena Boagen, was killed in Nyanga, according to an account in the BBC report.

Police described Boagen’s death as allegedly connected to extortion-linked crime. They said a post-mortem was being conducted under standard protocols. The report also said police had previously told the BBC that suspects entered the barbershop where Boagen was working and demanded money from him before he was shot; suspects fled the scene, and no arrests had been reported at the time of the BBC account.

In connection with Ghana’s protest request, South Africa’s police urged the Ghanaian side to provide details of what police called the Khayelitsha incident so the matter could be probed further.
