The coach of South Korea’s men’s national team stepped down after the team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup, following calls from President Yoon Suk Yeol for an investigation into the circumstances of the loss.
South Korea’s national football coach has resigned after the team was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup, a development that quickly escalated into a political dispute over responsibility for the defeat, according to BBC reporting published June 29, 2026.
BBC said South Korea failed to advance from the tournament after missing out on a place among the eight best third-placed teams. The elimination ended South Korea’s campaign at the stage that determines which teams progress based on group results and tie-breaking criteria.
In the wake of the loss, South Korea’s President called for a probe into how the team was eliminated and what factors contributed to the outcome, BBC reported. The president’s request for investigation added pressure to the team’s leadership at a time when national sports programs are scrutinized publicly and officials face calls for transparency.
BBC reported that the coach resigned following the president’s move, framing the resignation as part of a broader response to the demand for accountability. The dispute centered on whether internal decisions and preparation led to the team falling short of qualification.
The report indicates the immediate sequence was the World Cup elimination, then the president’s call for an investigation, and then the coach’s departure. That timeline suggests the matter moved from tournament performance to government scrutiny within days.
No further details were provided in the BBC item on the specific scope of the investigation, the identities of the individuals involved, or the procedural steps that would follow. Those elements typically determine whether any changes occur in coaching staff, federation management, or administrative oversight.
For South Korea, the next phase is expected to involve the formal handling of the president’s probe request and whether it results in policy or staffing changes within the country’s football structures, while also closing out the coaching transition after the resignation.
