THE APEX TIMES
Spotify changes how it counts podcast plays, tying metrics to 30 seconds of listening or watching
Starting immediately, Spotify for Creators will report play counts based on episodes played for at least 30 seconds, alongside new analytics views meant to better separate active listeners from accidental starts.
Spotify is updating the way it measures podcast plays, a change it says is intended to make creator metrics more consistent and more reflective of intentional audience consumption.
The company says that starting today, play counts will reflect the number of times an episode was watched or listened to for at least thirty seconds. Spotify linked this threshold to internal audience behavior data, saying the 30-second mark is a reliable indicator of intentional consumption and helps filter out low-intent activity like accidental starts.
Spotify also presented the work to the podcast measurement industry over the past year, including discussions with the Alliance for Measurement in Podcasting (AMP). The company said its data contributed to AMP’s newly announced definition for Podcast Plays, which Spotify is now adopting in its own reporting.
For creators, the metric change is paired with a broader refresh of Spotify for Creators, Spotify’s tool suite for podcasters that includes new charts, metrics, and “trends tools” aimed at giving teams a more comprehensive view of engagement rather than just raw reach.
Spotify says the new analytics experience includes a way to see how audiences split between first-time listeners and returning fans. Creators will also be able to compare each episode’s performance against their overall catalog, and explore fan activity through a new engagement tab that is designed to make it easier to follow how audience behavior evolves over time.
The company is also rolling out a redesigned homepage within Spotify for Creators to surface more actionable information at a glance, rather than burying key indicates across multiple screens. In addition, Spotify says expanded historical data will let creators track plays, audience interactions, and growth back to their first day on Spotify.
Spotify’s announcement frames the update as a response to how podcasting has shifted deeper into the streaming era, where formats and listening behavior have become more varied across devices and platforms. In that environment, Spotify argues that traditional play counts can overstate audience interest if they include brief, low-intent interactions.
By changing the play-count denominator to a time-based engagement floor, Spotify is effectively narrowing what counts as a “play” to something closer to active attention. That may also align expectations between creators and platforms, particularly if other parts of the industry adopt compatible definitions through AMP.
Even with the new standard, Spotify did not provide detail in its release on how creators should interpret legacy episode histories in the dashboard, beyond saying that expanded historical data will be available. It also did not disclose whether the 30-second definition applies uniformly across all Spotify surfaces and formats, or how edge cases such as partial episode resumes, background playback, or nonstandard media experiences are handled.
Looking ahead, the most immediate thing to watch is whether creators and their teams see shifts in reported play totals, and how quickly the new “first-time vs. returning” and episode-versus-catalog views become central to how podcasters benchmark performance. It will also be worth monitoring whether AMP’s broader measurement work continues to drive similar changes across other podcast platforms and analytics providers.
Why It Matters
- Podcasting metrics have become a battleground for consistency, and Spotify’s switch to a time-based play definition could materially change how creators evaluate episode performance.
- Aligning play-count reporting with industry measurement work through AMP may reduce confusion when creators compare analytics across platforms.
- More granular segmentation, such as first-time versus returning listeners and episode performance versus catalog benchmarks, could shift how creators plan content and marketing.
- A refreshed creator dashboard may also raise expectations that analytics reflect active engagement rather than low-intent clicks or brief trials.
