Spotify rolls out Reserved, holding tour tickets for eligible Premium subscribers ahead of general sales

The feature, which is governed by engagement- and location-based eligibility outlines, makes two concert tickets available during a limited purchase window before tickets go to the wider market.

Spotify is expanding its push into live music ticketing with “Reserved by Spotify,” a program that identifies an artist’s most engaged fans and holds two tour tickets for them to buy before general on-sales begin.

In a June 18 post on its newsroom, Spotify said Reserved works by matching eligible Premium subscribers (age 18 and older) to specific artists’ tours. The company holds “two tour tickets” for those users to purchase once their individual offer window opens, prior to the general sale going live.

Eligibility is determined using a range of indicates, including streaming activity and other forms of engagement such as saves and shares, along with location. Spotify said it uses “a wide range of indicates” and that location helps steer offers to fans who are more likely to attend.

Spotify emphasized that it does not disclose every detail of the underlying approach. The company said the goal is to reward genuine, active fan engagement while avoiding incentives for people to attempt to game the system rather than participate as real supporters.

When a user is eligible, the Reserved offer appears on the Spotify Home screen. Spotify said it notifies users via email, push notification, and in the “Your Updates” section, and it urged users to keep concert and event notifications enabled, keep the app updated, and ensure their location is set in the Live Events Feed so the offer can be surfaced correctly.

Spotify’s instructions describe a straightforward workflow. Users can tap their Reserved offer to see available tour dates, learn when their Reserved window will open, and set a reminder. When the window begins, Spotify says users should tap “Buy now” and select up to two tickets for a Reserved-eligible date.

The purchase window is typically about a day, and Spotify said the two tickets held for a user are available throughout that on-sale period. Still, Spotify advised buying as soon as a fan knows which show they want, noting that the exact date, location, and seats a user prefers depend on real-time inventory.

Reserved is designed to offer flexibility. Spotify said users can buy tickets for any eligible date on an artist’s tour, not only the location closest to them, and that Reserved allocations include a range of seating and prices. It also noted that availability varies show by show.

After users select their tickets, Spotify directs them to Ticketmaster to complete checkout. If prompted, customers can connect their Spotify account to Ticketmaster so Spotify can verify Reserved access and unlock tickets. Spotify also said that for certain high-demand shows, users may be placed in a queue before reaching ticket selection, but that two tickets are held for the user across the entire on-sale window. It added that unclaimed tickets can move to the next most dedicated eligible fans and remain available while supplies last. Spotify’s post also suggested a “Pro tip” of connecting accounts ahead of time for faster checkout.

Reserved arrives as Spotify deepens its role in the live music ecosystem, an area where ticketing platforms, venues, and artists all have competing incentives. By selecting users based on their engagement and holding a small number of seats, Spotify is effectively bundling discovery and fandom indicates into a consumer-facing ticket experience, potentially increasing the likelihood that tickets are purchased by the fans an artist values most.

The program’s mechanics leave several questions unanswered in the public guidance. Spotify does not specify exactly which engagement behaviors carry the most weight, how eligibility changes over time, or how it defines the eligible geography for each tour. The company also does not disclose whether Reserved allocations are fixed in proportion to total inventory for a show, or how often the system reshuffles unclaimed inventory beyond its general description of “next most dedicated eligible fans.”

For fans, the immediate practical takeaway is timing and setup: confirm notifications and location settings in Spotify, watch the Home screen for an offer, and be ready to purchase within the stated window. For the broader industry, Reserved is another indicator that streaming platforms are trying to convert audience attention into measurable live attendance before general ticket demand becomes widely accessible. What to watch next is whether Reserved expands beyond the U.S. rollout Spotify referenced, and how the program performs for different artists and tour sizes, especially for high-demand markets where queues may determine which seats remain available.

Why It Matters

  • Reserved shifts part of the ticketing path into Spotify’s product, using streaming engagement as a gatekeeping mechanism rather than open market demand alone.
  • By holding tickets for selected users before general sales, Spotify may influence conversion rates from audience interest into purchases for tours.
  • The Ticketmaster integration suggests Spotify’s live music strategy is becoming operational, not just promotional, with verifiable access tied to user identity across platforms.
  • The program also indicates a potential tightening of how “fairness” and anti-scalping concerns are addressed, as Spotify explicitly says it avoids publishing enough detail for people to game eligibility.
  • How Reserved scales across artists and geographies will be a key measure of whether streaming platforms can sustainably participate in live-event monetization.
