Spotify rolls out Running Mode to turn playlists into guided workout soundtracks
The new feature for Premium subscribers on iOS in select countries builds personalized running sessions by matching music tempo to a user’s chosen plan and optionally adding spoken cues.
Spotify is expanding its fitness push with “Running Mode,” a new in-app experience designed to reshape how listeners build music for workouts. The company says the feature transforms selected playlists into running sessions that are tailored to a runner’s goals, music preferences, and chosen tempo, with Spotify guiding the workout as the music plays.
Spotify positions Running Mode as a solution to a common friction point in exercise listening: users spending time searching for the right tracks rather than getting moving. The company says the experience is meant for a range of outings, from race training to easy jogs and even more motivating walks.
The rollout starts today for Premium users on iOS in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. Spotify says users can find Running Mode in the Fitness Hub, then select from 25 curated running presets.
After choosing a preset, users can customize the workout type, including options such as interval, steady, or pyramid. Spotify also says users can set the duration and select a target tempo using beats per minute, then indicate what kind of music they want to hear.
Once the workout is configured, Spotify’s system matches beats to the selected tempo and moves through tracks in sequence, aiming for a more seamless, fluid listening experience. In addition to the music-based guidance, the feature can include optional audio cues in English to help guide the workout.
Spotify describes the cues as encouragement-like prompts that arrive at relevant moments, compared with having a supportive running companion beside you. The company also emphasizes that the cues are designed to avoid overpowering the music.
Running Mode is intended to complement existing fitness content on Spotify. Spotify points to fitness offerings already on the platform, including Peloton classes and creator workout videos, positioning the new mode as another tool inside the broader fitness ecosystem.
The company ties Running Mode to earlier personalization features it has used in fitness contexts, including “Prompted Playlists,” which it says have been among the most popular uses for prompts. Spotify characterizes Running Mode as a step beyond playlist suggestions, creating a running experience driven by chosen goals and the music listeners want to hear.
What Spotify does not specify in its announcement is how its tempo-matching and track sequencing behave in edge cases, such as when the chosen tempo is difficult to match across a library, or how users can adjust tempo mid-run without restarting a session. The announcement also does not disclose whether Running Mode will eventually extend to free tiers, additional countries, or other platforms beyond iOS.
Why It Matters
- Personalized fitness tooling can deepen Spotify’s role beyond streaming music, shifting it toward active, session-based experiences that may increase engagement during workouts.
- By translating tempo targets into guided sequencing, Spotify is pushing more of the workout “flow” into the app, reducing how much time users must spend curating music before moving.
- The feature could strengthen Spotify’s competitiveness in music-adjacent fitness ecosystems where training guidance and coaching-like cues are increasingly expected.
