Spotify turns Nairobi’s “greasy spoon” concept into a 12-day music hub with Greasy Tunes
The Greasy Tunes Nairobi residency runs July 15-26 at Heltz House and centers on how young listeners use music to connect in everyday life, from food and fashion to podcasts and live shows.
Spotify is taking its streaming relationship with Nairobi out of the app and into a physical venue with Greasy Tunes Nairobi, a multi-week residency designed around how people in the city listen, meet, and unwind. The program is running July 15 to 26 at Heltz House, a community events space, with a total length of 12 days of themed sessions and performances.
At the center of the concept is a familiar, everyday setting. Spotify says the residency was inspired by an original idea of turning a classic “greasy spoon” cafe into a cultural hub, then adapting that approach for Nairobi as a place where music, conversation, and community can happen together in the same room. In its framing, Spotify positions Greasy Tunes as a reminder that music can be a shared experience, not just a background feed.
Spotify’s planning is also tied to listening behavior in Nairobi. The company said its data from June 2026 showed that listeners aged 18 to 24 account for more than half of all streams in the city. It also said listening peaks in the evening, linking the residency’s schedule and energy to the habits of young Nairobians as they wind down after the day.
“Greasy Tunes brings the energy people experience on Spotify into a shared physical space,” said Agnes Opondo, Artist and Label Partnerships Lead for East Africa. She described the program as reflecting how music already connects Nairobi’s young listeners, through food, conversation, creativity, and community.
The first week, titled “Starters,” leans into the idea that music is part of everyday social rituals. Spotify says Greasy Tunes Cafe transformed Heltz House into a daytime hub for work and connection, then shifted into evening programming built around live music and cultural events.
The week kicked off with a Kitchen Opening Party with The BAG, a Nairobi music and culture platform, bringing together themes of food, sound, and togetherness. Later, Karibu Night, hosted by Studio 18, translated Spotify’s Made In Kenya playlist into a fashion and cultural showcase, including live performance from BURUKLYN BOYZ, described by Spotify as a hip-hop and drill act. Spotify also scheduled live podcast recordings during the week, including Culture Club, Spotify’s editor-led podcast exploring African music and culture, featuring Kenyan songwriter and producer Eric Musyoka, along with The 30 Percent Podcast.
As the “Starters” lineup progressed, more live experiences took over the venue. Spotify said performances included The Fisherman’s Experience and ADUMA Presents, followed by Smocha Sundays, which blended gospel music, community, and a live football watch party. Spotify’s overall description of the week emphasizes how different kinds of gatherings and entertainment in Nairobi can revolve around sound.
The second week, titled “Mains,” shifts toward music as creative practice. It began with Gufy’s Room: Poetry, Music & Storytelling, a live performance combining spoken word, music, and storytelling from Kenyan poet and filmmaker Gufy. Spotify also described an event that looked behind the scenes at creative work through a workshop where Kasi Flavour championed women in music, followed by a fan event with songwriter and rapper Nyashinski.
Additional events scheduled for later in the residency include an EQUAL workshop and showcase with Ongeza Volume, a community platform spotlighting Kenya’s music ecosystem, plus a comedy night with The Standup Collective. The program is set to end with the Strictly Soul: Closing Party. Spotify has not detailed ticket pricing or capacity for individual events in the announcement, and the company’s public release focuses on programming themes and participating creators rather than on measurable outcomes for business or audience growth.
Why It Matters
- For a music streaming company, physical programming can deepen brand loyalty by converting online discovery into offline community experiences.
- Spotify’s emphasis on young listening behavior suggests the company is tailoring marketing and cultural partnerships to the user base that drives volume in Nairobi.
- By combining playlists, podcasts, and live performances, Spotify is reinforcing the ecosystem idea that audio culture includes both music and spoken content.
- The residency also functions as local talent promotion through partnerships with Kenyan platforms and creators, which can strengthen relationships with artists and labels.
