San Antonio’s latest two-way addition, Emanuel Miller, reaches his 26th birthday after joining the Spurs’ developmental rotation earlier this year. The move also underscores how frequently the Spurs have cycled their third two-way spot.
Emanuel Miller turns 26 on Friday, a personal milestone that also highlights a quieter, constant thread of NBA roster management: the two-way pipeline. Miller is listed as a Spurs two-way forward, and he signed that contract on February 23, joining San Antonio’s non-guaranteed depth group rather than a standard guaranteed roster role.
According to the Spurs’ reported transaction timeline, Miller entered after another reshuffling of the organization’s “revolving door” third two-way position. He took the spot most recently held by Stanley Umude, who in turn had replaced Kyle Mangus in December. Mangus replaced Riley Minix just days earlier, reflecting how quickly opportunities can open and close for players on the margins.
Miller’s current placement matters because the two-way roster is one of the league’s most fluid pathways to regular-season and postseason minutes. While the Spurs have not handed him recorded playing time in San Antonio within this account, the purpose of the contract appears to be preparation and readiness. The same report frames Miller’s assignment as exposure to the Spurs’ playoff environment in 2026, even if game minutes were not part of the picture.
The two-way context also extends beyond Miller. He joined David Jones Garcia and Harrison Ingram on the Spurs’ two-way roster, creating a small group meant to provide immediate practice depth and an option for call-ups depending on need. In many cases, these roles are less about a long-term anchor and more about keeping a short-handed rotation sharp, especially late in the season when injuries and matchup demands can shrink bench flexibility.
For the Spurs, the broader roster-building philosophy often shows up most clearly in their developmental slots. A two-way forward can be evaluated across training sessions, preseason-style preparation, and tactical work with the coaching staff. Even when a player does not log minutes, organizations can still gauge fit, defensive positioning, communication, and how a player responds to playoff intensity in practice.
The “third two-way spot” turnover story, in particular, is a reminder that the NBA’s last roster places are treated like a moving target. The report’s sequence, from Minix to Mangus to Umude to Miller, shows that San Antonio has used that slot as an opportunity engine. That approach can benefit the organization if the right player arrives at the right time, but it also means stability is not guaranteed for any single individual occupying the position.
What to watch next is whether the Spurs keep Miller in that role as a longer-term evaluative candidate, or whether the two-way spot remains a short stop on the organization’s roster ladder. If San Antonio faces roster crunches or changes its rotation priorities, a two-way contract can quickly shift from developmental preparation to a larger chance at game minutes. For Miller, the immediate test will be how he builds on this platform as the Spurs’ postseason experience becomes part of his professional resume.
