Clashes inside a prison on the outskirts of Sri Lanka’s capital left at least 25 people dead and more than 100 injured, officials and a television station reported Monday. The unrest occurred at a prison in Negombo, about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north of Colombo, and began on Sunday before continuing into Monday, according to police and prison officials.

Police said the violence started during Sunday and continued as officers responded on Monday. A police spokesman, Chandana Herath, said there were fatalities but could not immediately confirm the death toll reported by local television station Hiru, suggesting details were still being compiled as casualties were identified and injured people were treated.

A prison spokesman, A.C. Gajanayake, said the violence began among inmates. He said that when prison guards attempted to intervene on Monday, inmates attacked prison officials, escalating the unrest. Several officials and inmates died, and others were taken to hospitals, Gajanayake said, without providing an exact breakdown of the dead and injured.

An official at the area’s main state-run hospital said more than 100 people were admitted with injuries from the prison clash. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media, and did not specify the types of injuries or whether any patients were in critical condition.

The clashes followed a backdrop of long-running prison overcrowding in Sri Lanka. Reports cited that Sri Lankan prisons are highly congested, with more than 39,000 inmates housed in a system designed for a total capacity of just 10,000. That imbalance has raised concerns for public safety inside prison facilities and the ability of prison management to control disturbances.

International media outlets also reported the casualty totals and the time course of the disturbance. BBC reported that at least 25 people were killed, including four guards, and more than 100 were injured, aligning with the figures cited by officials and local reporting. Deutsche Welle likewise reported that more than two dozen had died and more than 100 were hurt after a violent dispute involving different prison populations in Negombo.

With the fighting now over or still ending, authorities were expected to continue counting casualties and investigating the incident’s trigger and command response. Sri Lankan prison authorities and police have not, in the accounts cited, provided charges or identified specific inmate groups involved, and the precise numbers of officials versus inmates among the dead remained under confirmation at the time of reporting.

Why It Matters

  • The incident underscores security risks inside Sri Lanka’s detention system, where overcrowding can heighten the danger of internal violence.
  • Over 100 admissions to a state-run hospital indicate a significant immediate strain on medical services and emergency response.
  • The fact that police could not immediately confirm the local TV-reported death toll highlights how casualty accounting and public information can lag during prison emergencies.
  • With both inmates and prison personnel reported among the dead, the event raises questions about staffing, intervention procedures, and accountability for preventable escalation within prison facilities.
