Through a new partnership with the City of Pittsburgh Recreation Centers, the Steelers and Giant Eagle will offer free lunches at participating CitiParks locations on days Pittsburgh Public Schools close early or are closed.
The Pittsburgh Steelers announced a community partnership with Giant Eagle to provide free lunches for students attending City of Pittsburgh Recreation Centers through the CitiParks program when Pittsburgh Public Schools are closed or dismiss early.
The meal support is designed to help cover for days when school meal services are not available, with the Steelers and Giant Eagle partnering with CitiParks to maintain access to lunch for children using the recreation centers.
According to the Steelers, the program will serve students at 10 participating CitiParks Recreation Centers, which are also extending hours and adding programming during school closures to keep a safe, supportive environment for young people.
Steelers Senior Director of Community Relations Blayre Holmes Davis said the organization wants school closures to not result in children going without meals, pointing to the importance of school lunches for daily nutrition.
Mayor Corey O’Connor credited the Steelers and Giant Eagle partnership for recognizing the role recreation centers play for families during time off from school.
