With New York still marking the franchise’s first NBA championship in 53 years, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith says the Knicks should be viewed as a force next season, but he’s not ready to pencil in another title parade.
The Knicks’ long-awaited championship was still being celebrated in Lower Manhattan when ESPN analyst Stephen A. Smith stepped into the conversation about what comes next. According to Yahoo Sports’ account of Smith’s comments, the message was clear: don’t start assuming the parade schedule for 2027, even if the Knicks look like one of the league’s most formidable teams entering the next postseason.
The backdrop to Smith’s stance was real and immediate. During Thursday’s festivities tied to New York’s championship moment, millions were said to gather in Lower Manhattan as the franchise celebrated its first NBA title in 53 years. The public celebration underscored how rare the Knicks’ success has been in the modern NBA era, and it set the stage for a debate that fans and analysts revisit every year after a title: how quickly can the same roster reset and reassert itself at the top?
In the Yahoo Sports report, Smith is described as naming the Knicks as a heavy favorite to build another strong postseason résumé. That part matters because it indicates confidence in the team’s core and its ability to remain relevant beyond a single championship run. But the downplaying, as presented in the story, is about the difference between “deep run” and “champion again,” a gap that almost always widens as other teams adjust, scout trends, and prepare for the reigning standard.
The celebration itself offered a snapshot of the Knicks’ center-of-gravity for this title. In the event photos referenced with the report, Jalen Brunson is shown holding the Larry O’Brien NBA Finals Trophy alongside Karl-Anthony Towns. While that image is about the moment, it also reflects the broader argument Smith appears to be making: the Knicks can look like a contender from the outside, but repeating often demands more than just having stars and momentum. It requires surviving the league’s counter-adjustments and maintaining performance when the pressure is highest.
Smith’s framing also reflects a common pattern in sports analysis after championship wins. Expectations rise rapidly, sometimes faster than the realities of a new season. Even when a team looks strong on paper, the postseason is a different environment, where matchup dynamics, health, and late-game execution can reshape outcomes from series to series. Yahoo Sports’ description of Smith’s view positions the Knicks as capable of returning to the conversation, while warning against conflating “favorite” status with certainty.
For what to watch next, the key is not whether the Knicks are good again, but how they handle the transition from celebratory headline to sustained excellence. If New York continues to play with the same brand of structure and composure that tends to carry teams through playoff pressure, Smith’s “favorite for a deep run” thesis will find support quickly. If the team’s execution wobbles against top opponents, the “not necessarily a championship” part of the message becomes the more useful one for fans trying to understand how difficult it is to repeat. Either way, the Knicks’ title won’t just end with the trophy, it will start the next debate.
