Kenya Airways reported more than six hours of delays and some flight cancellations after a strike disrupted operations at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, affecting travelers heading to domestic and international destinations.
Passengers at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport faced extended wait times on Monday after a strike disrupted flight operations at Kenya’s main airport, Kenya Airways said. The airline reported delays of more than six hours, with some flights cancelled, leaving travelers stranded at terminals as airline and airport staff worked to restore service.
In a statement carried by BBC World, Kenya Airways said the industrial action affected scheduled departures and arrivals, producing cascading disruptions across the carrier’s timetable. The airline did not provide detailed information in the report about which groups were involved in the strike or what specific work categories were affected.
The delays were particularly consequential for passengers with tightly timed travel plans, including those traveling onward after landing in Nairobi. With flight schedules disrupted for several hours, passengers reported waiting in the airport environment while gate and check-in processes were adjusted as aircraft and crew availability changed.
Kenya Airways said the impact included cancellations as well as delays, indicating that some aircraft movements could not be completed within the normal operating window. While the airline’s statement focused on the immediate disruption to flights, the broader effects on passenger itineraries remained evident in the airport setting.
For travelers, the operational disruption raised routine but urgent questions about contingency arrangements during transport strikes, including how airlines manage rebooking, accommodation needs, and communication of revised schedules. Kenya Airways did not outline in the report what specific customer assistance measures were offered to affected passengers during the disruption.
Airport strikes can also create knock-on effects for other carriers and for logistics systems that depend on flight schedules. Extended delays can affect staff shifts, baggage handling, and the timely movement of aircraft between routes, which can in turn lead to further cancellations later in the day.
Kenya’s aviation environment is sensitive to disruptions because many travelers connect through Nairobi, and the airport functions as a major hub for regional and international travel. When strikes hit the airport directly, airlines typically need to coordinate with airport operations and air-traffic processes to determine which flights can be rescheduled without breaching safety and operational requirements.
It was not immediately clear from the report how long the strike would continue or whether services would normalize quickly after Kenya Airways’ stated disruption window. Passengers were advised to monitor official communications for updates as airlines and airport authorities manage the return to normal schedules.
