A market report says Elon Musk is again weighing how much authority Tesla should retain over its Terafab effort in Texas, and that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. could be more involved than previously indicated.
Tesla’s Terafab chip project in Texas is drawing fresh attention, after a market report said Tesla CEO Elon Musk is reconsidering how much control the automaker should keep over the initiative. The report characterizes the discussion as a shift from an earlier posture in which Tesla would steer more of the manufacturing relationship itself.
According to the Yahoo Finance report published Monday, Musk may be open to letting Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. take a bigger role in the Terafab effort. TSMC is one of the world’s leading contract chipmakers, producing semiconductors for a wide range of companies and designs rather than acting solely as a captive manufacturer.
The report frames the change as a “blink” moment by Musk, suggesting Tesla’s approach could evolve even if the company continues to pursue domestic or near-term capacity ambitions for advanced chips. Terafab, in the broadest sense, is Tesla’s plan to build semiconductor manufacturing capacity and develop in-house or closely guided chip supply for its vehicles and related systems.
Beyond the control-versus-partnering question, the report does not provide enough detail to determine what the operational relationship would look like, or what specific allocation of responsibilities Musk is weighing. It does not describe, for example, whether Tesla would still manage key process steps, design integration, yield targets, or long-term production volume planning.
The most material claim in the report is the potential role expansion for TSMC, which would align with a common industry pattern: even when automakers and electronics firms push for specialized chips, they often depend on established foundries for production scale and manufacturing know-how. If TSMC’s involvement increases, it could also reduce execution risk versus starting from scratch on a fully independent line, although the report does not explicitly say that is the rationale.
Tesla, for its part, has repeatedly emphasized that software, data, and increasingly customized hardware are central to its vehicle strategy. For the company, chips are not just components but upstream determinants of performance, power efficiency, and features that show up later in the product cycle, including advanced driver-assistance and in-vehicle computing.
Still, the report leaves key questions unanswered. It does not specify whether Tesla has formally updated its Terafab plans, what timeline is being discussed, or whether Musk’s reconsideration reflects a negotiated change in partnership terms rather than internal strategy deliberations. Without additional confirmation from Tesla or regulatory filings, the extent and timing of any shift remain uncertain.
