The surge is being driven by a sizable June haul that included a large portion of the 2027 class and by a key commitment that arrived in the first days of July.

According to Yahoo Sports’ reporting on the Texas recruiting cycle, the Longhorns added 11 commitments from the 2027 class during June, part of a broader run that totaled 12 commitments in the month. That volume matters because team recruiting rankings are heavily influenced by both the number of pledges and the average profile of those prospects, especially when multiple high-end recruits commit within a short window.

Texas’ recruiting jump is tied to a centerpiece pledge in the secondary. The reported biggest addition was a commitment from five-star defensive back John Meredith III, described as the No. 2 player in the 2027 cycle on Rivals/On3 and No. 4 on the 247Sports rankings. The report also frames the landing as among the highest-ranked defensive back prospects Texas has signed, underscoring the kind of difference-maker that can shift a team’s standing quickly on composite boards.

The Longhorns then added another top-end piece shortly after the July start, with a commitment from five-star offensive lineman Ismael Camara on July 4, as reported by Yahoo Sports. The timing of that decision is also significant because the report notes that, at the time of Camara’s commitment, only four uncommitted five-stars remained in the 2027 class, meaning Texas’ ability to secure another premium prospect helped raise the Longhorns’ overall team value.

Beyond the five-star additions, the report states Texas also brought in multiple four-star prospects and a handful of high three-star recruits in June, bringing the class total to 22 commitments for 2027. There is, however, a recruiting caveat worth watching: Yahoo Sports’ reporting says five-star wide receiver Easton Royal, who committed to Texas in November, appears to be trending toward a flip to LSU. The same report characterizes Texas’ 2027 “five-star roster” as potentially shrinking from five to two depending on how that situation resolves over the next several weeks, with Royal indicating he wants recruiting wrapped up by the end of July.

For Texas, the practical next step is less about the ranking numbers themselves and more about sustaining the momentum while protecting the high-end core of the class.
