The Specials are releasing what they describe as their final album, “Live From The Cathedral,” a live recording taken from performances at Coventry Cathedral in 2019. The band said the collection is intended as a tribute to frontman Terry Hall, who died in 2022, and that the songs were captured during shows it called more than just concerts.

BBC reported that the recordings were made across four performances in the cathedral ruins, with the release coming this month. In statements carried by the BBC, band members said the cathedral setting helped shape the “homecoming” feel of the performances. Guitarist Lynval Golding told BBC Radio 2 that the band did not fully grasp how distinctive the recordings were until they listened back. He said the group felt it had been “on fire” during the shows, describing tight performance each night and calling the period “absolutely amazing.” He also said the release was needed because, while Hall was “spiritually” present for the band after his death, he was no longer physically there.

Golding said the project’s purpose was to place those performances before the public, framing the album as a piece of work that needed to be issued. BBC also reported that the band had expressed the belief that their music remains relevant more than four decades after their initial breakthrough, including through enduring songs associated with social and economic unrest in Britain.
