Tigers move on from Joey Cora, install Billy Boyer as third-base coach

The Detroit Tigers have separated from third-base coach Joey Cora, ending a run that included more than two seasons helping manage the club’s baserunning and in-game decisions from the third-base line. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch announced before Tuesday night’s game against the Oakland Athletics that Cora had left the organization, and that the decision was mutual after meetings between Hinch and Cora.

One report analyzing the coaching change said Detroit’s baserunning grades had been fairly strong during Cora’s tenure overall, even if the club did not rely heavily on stealing; that analytical framing suggests the Tigers were not simply abandoning a style, but potentially adjusting it.
