Detroit won Saturday’s second game of the three-game weekend set at Comerica Park, turning a rough start against Chicago into a six-inning start by Troy Melton and timely offense led by Dillon Dingler.
The Detroit Tigers took the second game of their three-game weekend series against the Chicago White Sox with a 4-1 victory at Comerica Park on Saturday afternoon, moving one win away from completing a sweep on Sunday. The result matters beyond the single game because it positions Detroit to control the series narrative, rather than simply trying to earn one in the final matchup.
Tigers right-handed pitching, anchored by Troy Melton, largely shut down the White Sox after an early jolt. According to the game report, Chicago produced a leadoff home run, putting Detroit behind immediately. Melton then “bounced back,” settling into a groove and working one-run ball for the remainder of his outing, finishing with six innings in a performance designed more to limit damage than chase flash.
Detroit’s offense did not need to explode to swing the game. Dillon Dingler paced the Tigers’ production with a 2-for-4 line that included a home run and a pair of RBIs, providing the kind of direct run production that turns a close game into a manageable lead. With the Tigers manufacturing just enough separation, the late innings became less about batting volatility and more about preserving a lead.
From Chicago’s perspective, the challenge was that the White Sox could break through only intermittently. After the early home run, they were not described as creating sustained scoring opportunities, and the Tigers’ ability to keep the game to a one-run contest for stretches reduced the urgency for Detroit’s bullpen. For Detroit, the payoff was the ability to win while keeping the margin within reach, a practical way to keep momentum carrying forward into the series finale.
The next step is straightforward: Sunday’s game carries the added weight of the chance to sweep. The Tigers will likely be looking to ride the same core approach that worked on Saturday, pitching for innings while forcing Chicago to generate offense without the benefit of early leverage, then backing their starters with run production from top and mid-order hitters like Dingler.
