A reported three-year extension for the defensive tackle increases his new-money average and reinforces Tennessee’s approach to keeping a core playmaker on the roster.
The Tennessee Titans and defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons have worked out a new contract agreement, according to Yahoo Sports, with the reported structure designed to raise the market bar for players at his position. The deal, as first reported, is a three-year, $105.8 million extension, which would translate to a new-money average of $35.2 million. For a team-building exercise, it is the kind of move that indicates Tennessee intends to anchor its defense with a proven interior disruptor rather than look outward in free agency.
Simmons’ role matters because interior defensive tackles are increasingly central to how defenses create pressure without relying solely on edge rushers. When a player can collapse the pocket and influence both run fits and pass protections, the ripple effects show up in scheme and personnel decisions, including how often a defense can dial up simulated pressures and how it balances personnel packages. With Simmons locked in for multiple more seasons, the Titans can plan the front around consistent disruption from the center of the line.
The reported dollars are notable within the broader NFL landscape of contract negotiations. A new-money average of $35.2 million would place Simmons among the highest-paid players at his spot, reflecting how teams value down-to-down interior impact. It also sets a clearer reference point for negotiations involving other defensive tackles who produce similar pressure profiles, particularly those who can win with power, leverage, and quickness off the snap.
The Titans have long understood that retaining elite defenders is as much about operational continuity as it is about talent. Even when schemes evolve from year to year, a cornerstone player provides stability for the defense’s identity, from gap discipline to how the linebackers are asked to process blocks behind the line. Keeping Simmons in-house can reduce the churn that comes with replacing a player who understands the timing of his teammates and the mechanics of the system.
Still, the specific contract details beyond the headline figures are not included in the initial report, at least in the material available here. Contract structures in the NFL can involve different mixes of guarantees, option language, and performance-based escalators, all of which affect the real flexibility for both sides. Until official league or team documentation is available, the accurate interpretation of the extension will depend on the final terms filed for the transaction and any clarified bonus and guarantee breakdowns.
From a player-development perspective, the reported extension also changes the stakes for the rest of Tennessee’s defensive front. With Simmons’ future secured, attention can shift to complementary roles, such as the run-support responsibilities next to him and the pass-rush assignments that pair with his rush lanes. Teams often target speed and versatility around a high-end interior core so that pressure can be sustained across different game scripts.
What to watch next is confirmation of the exact agreement through official Titan communications and league transaction reporting, plus any downstream roster moves that commonly follow a large extension. Those follow-on steps can include balancing the rest of the defensive line’s pay structure and deciding how to allocate practice reps and snaps during offseason work. For now, the reported extension establishes Simmons as a long-term anchor and gives the Titans a clear report about their priorities on defense.
If you want, I can also produce a companion explainer on why defensive tackle contract benchmarks are rising, and what that typically changes for defensive game plans (run fits, pass-rush duos, and pressure packages).
